The Sport Crack/Armchair GM Collaborative Tri-Season MLB Award Presentation

After much debate, discussion and witty comments in the presentation portion of the article, I finally had enough information to pick a victor. For a full list of the awards and nominees click here.

If your too lazy to go and read part one, these are awards for the first third of the season. Why, you ask? Well, why not?

The better off without them award goes to...

Barry Zito of the San Francisco Giants! Along with this prestigious award, Barry is also being heard in conversations about the worst contract signings ever made. Hey, at least the Giants have Tim Lincecum.

The flashback to draft day hitting award goes to...

Chipper Jones of the Atlanta Braves! Chipper is on base pace to finish the season with a batting average roughly two and a half times his own weight! Nicely done!

The flashback to draft day pitching award goes to...

Brandon Webb of the Arizona Diamondbacks! Luckily for me, I originally drafted the last two people on my team. Unluckily for me, I traded both of them and have since been frustratingly mediocre.

The failure to live up to expectations team award goes to...

The Detroit Tigers! Detroit’s hitting has lived up to expectations, but it’s pitching hasn’t even lived up to AAA expectations.

The speculative, steroid blues award goes to...

Eric Gagne of the Milwaukee Brewers! Eric might be better off actually trying to sing blues for a living with the way things have been going.

The MVP award goes to...

Chase Utley of the Philadelphia Phillies! He’s been playing out of his mind, that’s all that needs to be said.

The ace award goes to...

Edinson Volquez of the Cincinnati Reds! Edinson could have also won the “Who is this guy, exactly?” award, had it existed.

The shutdown award goes to...

Francisco Rodriguez of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Yes, I’m aware I left Brad Lidge of the nominee list. My fault. If there were a silver and bronze medal, he would have gotten the bronze. But there isn’t, so…

The fantasy team killer award goes to...

Erik Bedard of the Seattle Mariners! Not only has Erik killed many fantasy teams, but he’s also helped killed the hopes and dreams of Seattle fans.

The packed bandwagon award goes to...

The Tampa Bay Rays! The Rays also would have received the “Team with the most players willing to throw down (and win)” award, had it existed.

The soon to be a sporting household name award goes to...

Jay Bruce of the Cincinnati Reds! Is it too early to assume he’s going to be great? I mean, we’ve seen enough, right?

With that, the awards ceremony must now come to a close. Thank you to all who participated and apologies to all those who didn’t get an award. They’re not even real, so your good!

My thoughts...

Totally agree with the Giants being better off without Zito...

Chipper Jones, flashback hitter, good choice...

Brandon Webb... how did Volquez not win this one?

The Tigers suck compared to how good everyone thought that they would be this season...

Gagne only won because he got the vote from all 13249371234 Red Sox fans on this site...

Chase Utley is the MVP...

Volquez wins the ace award... so how did he not win the flashback pitcher award?

I voted for Rodriguez by accident. I should have voted Wagner. Rodriguez is still very deserving, so I don't feel bad...

I can see how Bedard could be a fantasy killer. If anyone had listened to me, they wouldn't be in the situation where he is killing their team...

I was on the bandwagon before the season started ;)

The only reason Jay Bruce won is because ESPN built him up so much for the week he was called up. So now everyone knows his name, and that is why he got all the votes...

Great stuff once again Crackajg...

Thanks Falcon, I tried to stick with whoever won in the voting but also tried to steer away from multiple winners. I wonder how many of these victors will still be front runners come August or so... I say a bit more than half.

Again, great article, Crackajg. This really was an amazing idea. I can't argue much about many of the picks.

However, in AGM's fantasy baseball league, we'd probably want Edinson Volquez over Brandon Webb because of the fact that he has such a low ERA and such a high number of strikeouts. I would've switched Webb and Volquez around. Either way, I'm fine with it.

Wait, K-Rod won the Shutdown award. I thought this would go to Mariano Rivera in a landslide. Jeez, AGM is filled with so many biased Red Sox fans that we don't know what to do with them. :)

I was on the Rays bandwagon after Falcon's Spring Training articles. I knew they were going to do decently well then. However, I didn't know that they'd do this well this far into the season.

UTLEY FOR MVP!

Eric Gagne... you suck.

I'm sure Jay Bruce is going to do well for the Reds. Yes, it's too early to say that he's going to do great, but he sure has a lot of potential.

Thanks for posting this up, Crackajg. Very creative.

I disagree with the Fantasy League comment, Romi. The guy who set up the league put a premium on innings pitched and ER allowed, and Webb's more likely to go deeper into games. At the end of the year, I guarantee he has a better ERA than Volquez.

You're probably right about Brandon Webb's ERA being lower than Volquez's by the end of the season. The reason why Volquez has pitched so few innings compared to Webb is because he walks so many batters. He pitches 100+ pitches every time he has started so far this season (with the exception of one game) since April 17th. And if he messes up in one or two games, his ERA is going to go sky high in a very short amount of time.

Good work Crackajg...great idea that worked great. Not taking Zito's win yesterday very seriously since he was facing a rookie that got bombed.
