NBA Conspiracies w/ OFD: The NBA Draft Lottery is a joke!

After putting aside my beef with the NBA and its funny business, last night made me even more determined to believe that the NBA is a phony league. Ever since the NBA Draft Lottery began, it seems like there has been something wrong with it every year; or maybe it’s just me. You’ve seen what happened when Patrick Ewing went to the New York Knicks, and we see what’s happened with Tim Duncan when he went to the San Antonio Spurs. And don’t let me remind you about how the Toronto Raptors ended up getting the No. 1 overall pick in 2006. Who did they get? An international player, Andrea Bargnani. Wouldn’t that be great for a Canadian franchise to go out and get an international player? I mean, they don’t even show the ball being picked for goodness sake. I felt that the Boston Celtics would be the ones to take the #1 pick last year but the first two picks went to two struggling franchises out West who needed saviors. Those two saviors were #1 and #2 in last years draft. And for some reason, I can’t help but to believe that the Boston didn’t get those picks because the deal that brought the Big Three into town was already a done deal (that we didn’t know was going to occur). But that’s over now and this is the reason why the NBA is itching to see Boston in the Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers, and I gave my opinion on how those deals went down.

Now I just don’t understand it. I would love to believe that it was a coincidence of what goes down in the NBA but last night gives me a reason not to. How the hell do the Chicago Bulls win the No.1 overall pick with a 1.7% chance of winning? Jumping from No.9 to No.1? This is ridiculous. With Chicago already being a halfway decent team, they probably played a little lackadaisical towards the end of the season in order to obtain a better chance in the NBA Draft Lottery. But even with less than a two percent of winning, they end up with the No.1. I can’t do anything but question that.

So with that said, lets take a look at the choices that Chicago has. The top two players (in my opinion) in this year’s NBA Draft are the two freshman stars, Michael Beasley and Derrick Rose. Both are NBA ready and both can help Chicago. Beasley can play either the PF or SF spot, and that’s where the Bulls have strength at. They have seven forwards on their roster and adding another would be silly. With Beasley being a guy who loves getting rebounds and isn’t afraid to go in to take them, the Bulls don’t necessarily need that. They were pretty strong in that department too because they were in the top ten in rebounding with 43 a game.

Now let’s take a look at Rose. This is a guy who showed us what he can do in college; break down the defense, drive to the basket, create plays and open shots, etc. With Chicago only having two true point guards on their team, Rose could fit in easily and run the offense just as good as Kirk Hinrich and Chris Duhon, if not better. Hinrich will need to have a better season that he did last year in order to be trusted by whoever their next head coach will be. If he can’t accomplish that, then he may see limited time. If Rose were to come into Chicago (which I feel will most likely happen), then he has the perfect situation into his lap.

It’s funny to me though, how this works out because Rose is a positional player that they could really use and he would make a great fit in Chicago. They need a go-to guy who is an excellent ball handler and if anybody, Rose is their guy. But even with him possibly being the first one taken in this draft, it gives me reason to believe that this is a conspiracy because THE GUY IS FROM CHICAGO!!!

Coincidence? Naw, I don’t think so.

Put that puzzle together yourself if you still don’t understand how that is working out. More notes from this, David Stern lives in Chicago with a place right down the street from Jerry Reinsdorf. If you don’t know who that is, he is the majority owner of the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls. These are two guys who have a history of having a good relationship, so it’s not surprising to me at all how this went down.

Maybe none of this would’ve occurred if Mike D’Antonio weren’t to go to New York over Chicago. I feel that the reason why New York didn’t get the No.1 pick is because they’re too deep in a hole to have the bounce back season that they need in order to revive the New York basketball scene. With Chicago, they already have the decent team and with the right coach, they may have already been on pace for a bounce back season. Now with the No.1 overall pick, I’m sure they will.

I know KD is messing around otherwise I'd call his viewpoint on this one kinda inane. Considering that the Trail Blazers had more prestige in the NBA then the perennially losing Bulls it would of made sense for the league to make sure Portland got their guy behind Hakeem going home to Houston... maybe Bowe was suppose to be the guy... now I'm thinking conspiracy....

I am, and I'm not. On one hand, Bowie was a great player and if not for the injuries likely would have been better than Olajuwon.

Looking back at the circumstances and how the league pretty much orchestrates things, it certainly gives at least a thought to the possiblility.

At the time, the league was built on the Lakers and Celtics and Magic and Larry. The league needed to add a third piece to the rivalry. Give the league a new way to ca$h in, (read:new TV contract) and create a possible rivalry between all three teams with an up and coming team with a hot, young player.

And let's not even get in to the league orchestrating Jordan's "retirement."

Likely would have been better than Olajuwon...now let's not get ahead of ourselves here...could have been better maybe...but likely?...really?

I'm as big of a proponent of not hating on Portland as the next sympathizer, but to suggest that a never-was-been minus injuries would have been better than a top 50 player is pushing it a bit...

Wow, to suggest a player who was unfortunately struck down by injuries would have been better than a top 50 all-timer is a big statement, but you might be right if the circumstances were different.

That would have been a better approach to take, JuT.

I just don't agree with that statement...i really don't think you're right, even if the circumstances were right

likely to means better chance than not...which i just don't agree with...

its certainly possible (we'll never known) but to make a relatively unqualified statement suggesting that (arguably) the biggest draft bust of all time, if healthy, would be better than a top 50 NBA player is pushing the limits

I have no issue with saying the guy was unlucky or maybe wasn't in the right situation...but "likely" is where i take issue...

I actually agree with KD. Big Sam had all the tools to be able to play at Hakeem's level. The NBA is a funny league all around. Me and my Dad we're discussing over dinner the other night (it became the only convo of the night) about how all the best NBA stories off the top of our head were of fights:
  • The Palace brawl
  • The Doug Christie/Rick Fox pre-season fight.
  • The Heat/Knicks brawl where JVG gets dragged like a rag doll by Zo Morning's ankle.
  • Kermit Washington smashing Rudy T's eye socket.
It really should come as no surprise where the NBA has an image problem when the "off the dome" memories are of fights.

Nice work, OFD. Here are a few thoughts I have though:

1. Why would the NBA fix the draft for the Spurs to get Tim Duncan? San Antonio is a small market and true conspiracy theorists believe that David Stern would do anything to keep them, and the low TV ratings they create, out of the Finals. If they wanted Duncan in San Antonio it backfired on them.

2. And you made it sound like the NBA offered the Toronto Raptors a great gift with the #1 pick and a chance to draft Andrea Bargnani. He is a mediocre player and he may not have even been a unanimous choice with Toronto. The NBA didn’t offer them a chance at a solid franchise player. They wouldn’t fix a lottery for this effect.

3. I’ve always thought it was suspicious that the Cleveland Cavaliers won the “LeBron James draft”. The Cavs got to take the best player available and LeBron, from nearby Akron, was able to stay home, which increased his chance at success since he was still just a teenager.

4. You asked - "How the hell do the Chicago Bulls win the No. 1 overall pick with a 1.7% chance of winning?” … Uh, they’re ball came out. It’s called Bingo. I know you’re only 16-years old, but that’s how bingo works. Strange things happen.

Anyway, you did a nice with this. You might need to investigate further to uncover actual NBA conspiracies, but your suspicious nature is refreshing. Maybe you should look into the way games are officiated if you want to find real NBA cheating.

Cant argue with point No.1.

For No.2, I dont think Bargnani is close to the player that he was supposed to be. With him being the #1 overall pick in '06, he hasnt done as much as a #1 pick should, but then again who does? I believe that it was just in trying to bring Toronto's franchise to a higher level and what other way would be better than bringing an international star to a Canadian expansion team?

For No.3, Cleveland had a higher chance (22%) chance of getting the No.1 pick so that doesnt bother me. Picking LeBton was probably the logical option.

And thanks for the compliment and the constructive criticism on No.4. I've looked at NBA officiating and just like the NBA, I think its a joke. Take a look at the last paragraph in this article if you want my take on that crap.

I don't quite agree with the theory, but playing Devil's Advocate I think that I can make a case for point one...

Tim Duncan is not a big media guy, he will not make the big head-lines, and he is just not that big personality that could revive a major city. Given that may be all that he is not because he is the most underrated player in NBA history (in my opinion)...

David Robinson, a great player, had zero rings before Duncan. When Robinson was hurt the season before Duncan's draft, the NBA found a way to give Robinson the best player in the draft. Almost ensuring he'd have a chance at a title...

Given that I may not agree that there is a Draft Lottery Conspiracy, I do believe that there are many conspiracies throughout all of professional sports...

Even though I don't agree with your theory, the piece is well written. As Kelsdad said, do some more research. Maybe Hopefully, you can prove me wrong...

I don't agree with your conspiracy theory at all, but if you are going to make that case, shouldn't you mention Orlando getting the number one pick two years in a row?

As for the theory, NBA Superblog has already mentioned the problems with the San Antonio and Toronto parts. As for Boston: you are arguing that the conspiracy is that they didn't win it? Funny, last year everyone was expecting a conspiracy that they would win it. Hooray! Conspiracy material for everyone!
As for this year: Chicago had a 1.9% chance, not no chance. It was unlikely, but not impossible. If there were a conspiracy in place, New York would have won. The NBA "needs" them to be good, and D'Antoni could have used Derrick Rose as his PG.

I think the NBA draft lottery in reality is a lot less interesting than some make it out to be.

And with the NY thing...if they got the #1 pick, I still dont think that they would be a playoff team. It's gonna take too long to rebuild them. With Chicago, you have a solid basketball city with the chance to do something big.

No, you didn't say no chance, but you've suggested conspiracy as the reason it happened. I'm only pointing out that even though it was unlikely, it is still certainly reasonable that a team with a 1.9% chance could win. After all, somebody has to win it.
As for New York, I just find it funny that you would suggest all these conspiracies but not include NY, who would be the first team that most conspiracy theorists would suspect. And on top of that, your reason for not including them is that they are so bad. Hey, every conspiracy has to start somewhere. Besides, as bad as they are, don't be surprised if the Knicks make the playoffs next year.

I'd like to avoid sounding like an asshole (too late, woops) but it's hard to take your arguments seriously with the numerous dangling participles and things like "...run the offense just as good..." cluttering your sentences. Seriously, it wouldn't hurt to take a minute or two to edit your writing before you click "post." Furthermore, the Bulls need Beasley like you need a refresher course in the English language. (Which is badly, by the way.) The team's frontcourt is an embarassment, and has been for the longest time. Hinrich will re-emerge with a legitimate scoring threat helping him on the offensive end, (read: Beasley). The fact that Rose is from Chicago isn't even relevant; it means next to nothing -- a pleasant coincidence, nothing more. Please, refrain from talking Chicago basketball if you haven't the faintest idea as to what goes on in the United Center. Thanks, 'preciate it.

OFD, nicely written article. While I didn't agree with everything you said, there is one thing that bothers me with the NBA and that's partly why the NHL surpassed it as my most favorite sport. The NBA seems at least to me that they've lost touch with the mainstream fans and have focused too much of their attention on those precious few franchises that seem to keep the league from falling into obscurity. During the Michael Jordan era, it was all about the Bulls. Since the turn of this decade, it's the Lakers. Add the Celtics to the mix now. Not quite as bad as the other two, but not far behind are the Cavaliers with LeBron James. And yeah, it comes as no shock the NBA likely wants a Lakers-Celtics champioship series so the marketing department can have a field day comparing today's two teams with those 80s battles between let's say Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. You watch, that's going to happen in a big way should Boston and Los Angeles each win their conference titles.

As for this lottery fix, it's likely Patrick Ewing was brokered to go to New York, but Chicago getting this year's #1 pick was pure luck. Do I like it? Hell no. I cannot stand the Bulls as it stems back to the 1990s. If the NBA cannot conduct their annual lottery with integrity and complete fairness, then this process should be abandoned altogether. I don't think there is much of any alternative as we'd see bad teams tank their seasons to get the #1 pick. But if fixing the NBA Lottery has been a common practice, then why as fans should we bother to pay any attention to it?

Here's a solution...abolish this Draft Lottery. Just do what every other sports league does and give the worst teams the top picks. Sure some teams will tank but you won't have to witness th tank-a-palooza we've seen in years past

I couldnt disagree more with that comment. I love the draft lottery. It adds excitment and inspires debate. Also SOME teams will tank? You have to understand that basketball is different from every other sport in the sense that one player can make a HUGE difference. If Lebron James 2.0 (whoever that might be) is comming out, and a team thinks they have a chance at getting him if they lose their last 50 games.... Think about how much money is involved in the marketing of professional basketball players. The New York Knicks for example would be silly NOT to tank and get the next phenom.

You can minus me all you want but that a person can write this article and be considered an NBA expert by some people in this community is a joke. I try not to be overly negative about others opinions, but OFD you are CONSTANTLY suggesting there are unfounded NBA conspiracies. The NBA is fixing the lottery so Tim Duncan ends up in San Antonio????? The Bulls can't use Micheal Beasley??? i wanted to read further but i'm sorry i couldn't.

You're not fixing the lottery for San antonio, over boston and philly who got the 2 and 3 picks that year.

The bulls have been looking for inside scoring for yeeeeeeears. (since at least 85 or before). they have 7 forwards on their roster? that's like saying the knicks have x amount of centers and including jerome james as one. Yeah they're there... but just cause they're living doesn't mean they count.

I appreciate the effort, but come on. to quote Mark Jackson... WE'RE better then that.

The league wanted to give David Robinson a title before he retired. The only way to do that would be to give him the best player in the draft that year Robinson was hurt. I'm not saying that there is a conspiracy, but that would be a way to look at the situation...

Oneflydude: Keep banging it out, kid. I wish I had a forum like this to develop my writing skills when I was 16. There are some people here who are mean. There are some people here who take things too seriously. It's freaking games, for crying out loud. You keep your head up and keep writing and don't let anybody tell you that you can't do something because, cliche as it sounds, if you want it enough you can. Okay?

OFD...don't let the haters get you down man! When you respond with vulgarity and anger it only adds fuel to their fire. I'm in this business, and its better to let the idiots speak for themselves. People keep bringing up your age...forget about it. It doesn't matter. You're a human being who deserves to be heard just like the rest of us. Age, as well as race, gender, etc. should not weigh in here. It's a blog website, guys...everyone relax. Instead of being a jerk-off, how about trying to embrace someone's differing opinion and accepting it? You don't have to agree with it, just be respectful. For God's sake, life is too damn short to be so caught up in this BS. We're all sports fans, so let's all be supportive. And, yes, it is possible to be critical and supportive at the same time.

After re-reading my comment, I can see how that would be a bit contradicting because there have been times when I've mouthed off, but now that I have more experience, I now realize the mistakes I've made. Hindsight is 20/15...also, OFD, the fact that there are over 80 comments on your article should mean something to you. The best sports minds out there cause controversy...just remember that...

the spurs got duncan because the franchise was planning on moving. just like portland and seattle were, thats why they got 1 and 2. it makes sense because they are the only teams in the northwest and if they leave they lose a part of the market and just combine it with another. seattle wants to move to oklahoma city where there are already like 6 teams competing for the same market. stern knows what he is doing. remember the nba is a business first. lakers and boston will be in the finals, cased closed. boston will win because pierce, kg and allen dont have rings. kobe already has 3. another conspiracy is 06 finals with mavs and heat. cuban opened his mouth one too many times and we all saw wade average 25-30 ft's a game, including the phantom call to end game 3. since that loss cuban has been pretty quiet and out of the news.
