Not the typical style article of this series, but it still comes from the mind of Apostrophe...

For years the failures of certain historic sports franchises are explained and excused because they are known to be cursed. These curses simply are excuses to cover up the inequity of particular franchises' inability to bring win a major championship in their sport. The idea of a curse on a franchise or even a city marvels fans; creating an interest and entertainment.

Stand Tall Billy, Stand Tall...
Stand Tall Billy, Stand Tall...
Curses on franchises essentially give reasoning to fans. They help to explain the unexplainable, to excuse all forms of realistic reasoning. As any fan of any sport would say, "A curse on a team means that there is almost nothing that team can do to succeed at the highest level and bring home a championship."

It doesn't take much to think of these curses. Even the most casual of fans know about the former Curse of the Bambino. Most likely fans know about the curse on the Chicago Cubs, the Curse of the Billy Goat. The Curse of Billy Penn not only covers a particular franchise but every major sporting franchise in Philadelphia. Familiar with these curses? Good because real or not, they are superstitions in which every fan should be in the know.

Now for an awkward jump from one subject to another...

The four top tier professional sports leagues in the country are the National Football League, Major League Baseball, National Hockey League, and National Basketball Association. Three of these leagues utilize seven game series in the playoffs to determine the next round; the exceptions being the National Football League and Major League Baseball's first round. Out of all these hundreds of series that have been played throughout the illustrious history of these sports, three teams have ever come back from being down three games to zero in a seven game series.

The ongoing series between the Dallas Stars and Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League marks the 1036 seven game series in the history of the four major sports. The Dallas Stars will attempt to comeback from being down three games to zero in a seven game series, the 271 occurrence throughout history. Out of those 271 series there has only been three instances in which a team has come back in the series to win the next four games to win the series. These teams were the 1941-42 Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL), 1974-75 New York Islanders (NHL), and 2004 Boston Red Sox (MLB).

Curses don't have to break this way...
Curses don't have to break this way...
Most notably of all three of these series uncoincidentally is the series involving the 2004 Boston Red Sox coming back to defeat the New York Yankees. The series was a turning-point in the franchise's history, as well as a turning-point in the franchise's fortunes. After winning the series, the Red Sox went onto the World Series; breaking the Curse of the Bambino during the process.

So how do these two subjects tie together? It is simply a matter of the two ingredients necessary for Syndrome 2004...

In the three plus one-half years since this remarkable series comeback in 2004, there have been numerous times in which a team has gone down three to nothing. Each and every time this has happened, fans and reporters alike claim, "This series isn't over," and, "The 2004 Red Sox came back from a three to nothing deficit. If they can do it, our team can too." Realistically, this is almost never the case. In Philadelphia, Syndrome 2004 has stuck and gone to far to the extreme.

The four major sports franchises of Philadelphia has now gone over the century mark in seasons played without a major championship. It is safe to say that the Curse of Billy Penn may just be true. The fans here are desperate for a championship. They are looking for something anything to turn these fortunes around. What has the City of Brotherly Love come up with now? The stupid theory, now to be coined now as Syndrome 2.4.

Maybe one day we'll see a championship...
Maybe one day we'll see a championship...
What is this idea? Well, some of the more casual fans have decided that the only way for Philadelphia to break its infamous curse is to pull of a miracle feat. Moreover, winning a seven game series after being down three games to none. The theory is that when the Red Sox did this back in 2004, they essentially had broken the curse and it was just a matter of time before they won the World Series.

Yes, the idea is preposterous. Why would a team need to go down three to nothing in order to break a curse? What about the Curse of the Chicago Black Sox? That franchise broke their curse in 2005, after eighty-eight years, without any sort of dramatic come-from-behind play. But then again, there must be something wrong with the water in Philadelphia. That would explain why over twenty-five years later, this historic city of sports still is thirsty and now delusional for its next championship...

The thing I love about this article is the fact that you said that curses are just "excuses to cover up the inequity of particular franchises' inability to bring win a major championship in their sport." You couldn't be more right about that.

I disagree...

The Milwaukee Bucks aren't cursed...they're bad

but things like Bill Buckner or Bucky Dent or Aaron Boone...

you may not think of it as a curse...but how can a franchise suck and still be in that situation...

but Red Sox fans (especially the older ones) you can't tell me that those moments didn't forged the pure delirium you experienced in 2004...it only made it sweeter...

And that's what curses are all about...they're the steroids of victory

I think that sometimes a curse gets so ingrained into the very being of a franchise that the players subconciously start believing in it as well. A+ article Falcon, great job.

JuT, wouldn't that still be considered "inequity", in a way. Think about it. A championship win isn't earned until the very last game two teams play against each other. The playoffs are just like the regular season games, except they're more important games, and against better competition. Bill Buckner's error, Bartman's interference, etc. It's all a part of a game. However, a team doesn't earn a championship until the final play.

Now that I think about it, teams are never unlucky. You can't have an excuse because of one or two plays. When you blame Steve Bartman for the Cubs not winning, how come you don't blame Mark Prior and Kyle Farnsworth for surrendering 8 runs in that same (8th) inning? Well, I guess it's just because people overlook certain things in a game.

How come Tim Wakefield surrendered that Aaron Boone home run? The Red Sox could've won if it wasn't for him.

...Well, think about this: how come Johnny Damon, Todd Walker, Nomar Garciaparra, and Manny Ramirez were [a combined] 3-for-20? It's not anyone's fault if Aaron Boone got a good pitch to drive over the wall.

i think its just how the ball bounces sometimes...

and sometimes the ball bounces away a lot...

Bill Buckner was a gold glover...that was a 1 in a million miss...

and no sport evidences the frequency of bad luck or lucky bounces more than baseball

but it is what makes championships so hard to win...you gotta do it all...

I mean...were those 1980s Broncos teams bad...how about the tarkanton vikings...Ewing's Knicks?

There's tons of good (if not great teams) who didn't win it all...

2007 Patriots come to mind

but those plays romi...in their essence are just as unlucky as wakefield's toss or Prior's misgivings

Which led to names like the "Billy Goat Curse" and the "Curse of the Bambino".

I'm not saying that Prior's bad outing in the 8th inning in game 6 was as "unlucky" as Buckner's bad hop; trust me, Buckner's was a lot more unlucky. When someone pitches badly, you can only give credit to the hitters of the opposing team. When you see something like Buckner's error in game 6 of the '86 WS, you know it was just a bad hop.

However, when looking at it, it wasn't like it was Bill Buckner's fault entirely. Remember the wild pitch from Bob Stanley that scored the tying run? What about that? That's pretty overlooked.

I know you know this, but I'm just emphasizing on the fact that there are many plays in sports (one key play from each game) that people think determine the outcome of the game, which isn't true at all.

but that one play changes everything...

he makes the catch and its over...

you can identify the exact moment...and it even given those other things, it doesn't mean the team was bad...

Look at Joe Carter...sure wild thing blew that pitch (change up?!), but what about the melt down in game 4? and you can't tell me the phils were inferior...they hold on in game four and the series is completely different

I think most fans dramatically underestimate the effects of luck in sports. When you think about all of the things that go into hitting a baseball, for instance, the tiniest margin of error can separate a home run from a worthless pop-up. In football, fumbles can bounce anywhere because the ball is irregularly shaped. Justin says baseball is the sport most subject to the whims of lady luck, but hockey can make a strong claim too, because there's so little scoring and the simple fact that you're sliding a rubber disc on ice. The best team probably wins the most in basketball, because there are so many possessions that random effects can be minimized, but even so there have been plenty of games decided on last-second shots that make or miss by fractions of an inch (Tim Duncan, or all people, rattles home a 3 that changes the entire course of the Suns franchise).

The point is, the outcomes of games are determined by randomness as much as skill -- as humans, though, we desperately look for patterns where none exist as a measure of explaining events over which we have no control, hence the creation of "curses". The odds might seem like they are against Philly going so long without a title, but then again, the odds are pretty long on any one team winning a single championship in any season to begin with. Think about everything that has to go right for that to happen, and you begin to appreciate how lucky anyone has to be to win a title at all.

the issues with clutch are many

one is sample size, another is definition...

is clutch bottom of the 9th or bottom of the 9th game 7 world series?

Secondly, if the latter, then the sample size is...what...one or two ABs at most?

The more i listen to Davis, the more he's right on this...

I do disagree at some points...I think some players have a propensity to rise to the situation or at least ignore it (robert horry, IMO is a guy who's stupid enough to not notice the timeliness of a situation, while a guy like Donovan McNabb totally feels a situation)

Beyond that, there's so many things that go into it...runners in scoring position...number of outs, who's up behind you, how you are hitting, who you're facing, what was said to you before you walked to the plate...the list goes on...

You might be clutch...or you might be an idiot...

I can buy to some degree that perhaps a player who doesn't understand the enormity of what's happening will not tense up and lose as much of his "true skill" as a player who is very aware of how much the moment means. But I look at it from a quasi-natural selection point of view: certainly there are players (and people) who "choke", who can't handle pressure. However, those players are going to be weeded out long before reaching the majors or the NBA or whatever, because there are many pressure-filled "checkpoints" along the way where they must succeed under duress. I don't see a player chronically incapable of handling pressure to the point where it significantly impacts his performance making it to the highest level of professional sports on the planet, it just wouldn't happen.

It's being on the field. It's playing or coaching or somehow being involved at a high level. It's understanding that certain, non-trackable intangibles, like clutch, do in fact exist.

It's knowing with no uncertainty that performance enhancing drugs do have an effect. It's knowing when watching a player, ONCE, whether or not he can play.

It's being able to tell what pitch is coming by the pitcher's arm angle. It's being able to tell how good a hitter will be, or is, by the size of the circle his hands make during the swing.

And for the record, Davis, I have TWO university degrees.

I just gave you a plus to offset that minus...

Anyway, it's true that I haven't played since high school, and that I kind of sucked when I did play. But I do genuinely love the game, and I stand by every statement I've ever made about it, because I'd like to think that I've never said something that wasn't backed up by either hard evidence or logic. Besides, in today's game, you have to keep an open mind to all approaches if you want success. Tacos and beer, as they say. The influx of a lot of non-traditional front office types in recent years only proves that there's more than one way to get to where you want to go (winning), and that a combination of old-school doctrines and new-age thinking is ideal.

and there is an entire generation of well rounded, rational fans who have no idea what a parade down broad street is like...

I've currently got a standing day off should any philly team win a title...quite literally, I'll be on the next plan to Philadelphia for the parade, no matter who wins...the next opportunity being october (heh...)

What's more interesting is...I have no idea what I'll do if any team wins...I mean, what can i do...I've spent the entirety of my sports life rooting for it to happen...but really just denying the inevitable loss...

Its to the point now where I just don't know what to expect if they win...I have zero idea...I expect disappointment...almost hope for it

Its weird...but given the experiences i've had...i practically hope teams lose...because in the end, that is the victory...

For many of you...i theorize, a philly team victory will be ultimately more sweet than most...just because of the wait

Philly fans know what's wrong...it isn't us and a good chunk of the time, it isn't them...there's no curse, just a struggle...but the moment it happens, the elation will never be quite that good again...

For that one moment, I (and every other fan) will be on top of the world...

All, I'm asking for is just one taste of it

I am a Phillies fan, and I don't belive they are cursed. Unless you call poor ownership and pitifully bad managerial choices a curse. And what about the years from 1951-1973? That's 23 years of futility for the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers and Flyers. Although the Sixers and Flyers are only on the tail end of that time period. But that's one championship in 23 years. I am not checking the timeframe for the Sixers and Flyers here, but a rough estimate is that there were 60 or so seasons of dismal failure, including the 1964 Phils collapse. There was no Billy Penn curse there. The teams just weren't very good.
