Usually I post this on Thursday, but after a particularly late Wednesday night out with friends I was in no shape to type, read or even walk yesterday. I think the only thing that pulled me out of my alcohol induced coma last night was the start of the College Football season. On to a look at the weekend ahead.
MLB
Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees - The Twins head to New York only a half game back of the White Sox in the Wild Card race , but are just coming off a series with Kansas City in which they lost two of three. Unfortunately for the Twins, their scheduled starters for the weekend series are Carlos Silva (8-12), Scott Baker (3-7), and Matt Garza (1-3). Needless to say the Twins offense is going to need to show up and they'll need K.C. to play Chicago just as tough as they just played them.
New York Mets at Houston Astros - Houston has quietly won 6 games in a row and have pulled themselves back into the NL Wild Card race. Now they'll have to keep it up against the best team in the NL. If Houston wants to prove they are a playoff team, this is the weekend to do it. This series will also see the return of Tom Glavine to the Mets rotation on Friday night.
Cincinnati Reds at San Diego Padres - On the flip side of the Astros are the struggling Reds who have lost 6 in a row and lost their Wild Card lead. They head west to face the Padres who have gone 7-3 over their last 10 games and have taken over the Wild Card lead. Honestly, if the Reds totally collapse, will anybody be surprised?
College Football
#9California at #20Tennessee - The only matchup of Top 25 teams this weekend has me intrigued. The spread on this game has gone back and forth between the two teams and it is mind boggling to me. Tennessee was bad last year. I mean really bad! They went 5-6 last year! And I think Cal will get over the USC hump and win the Pac-10 this year. This only constitutes a 1.5 point spread? I know they have a great defense, but their offense was horrendous last year and the defense will definitely get a test right out of the gate with Marshawn Lynch and Cal coming to town.
#8USC at Arkansas - The last few years this would have been a walk in the park for the Trojans, but when you have to almost totally reload on offense and then have them travel to a SEC school for their first game there is reason for concern. Watch out for Arkansas running back Darren McFadden. Last year as a freshmen he ran for over 1,100 yards and 11 TDs, but suffered a dislocated toe last month and is questionable for the game.
#2Notre Dame at Georgia Tech - Honestly I'll just be watching this for the possibility of an upset by All-American Calvin Johnson and friends. It's not because I hate Notre Dame (well maybe a little), but I just want to see all the talking heads on ESPN sprain a collective ankle jumping off the Charlie Weiss bandwagon.
Northern Illinois at #1The Ohio State University - Football returns to Columbus and I couldn't be happier. Well, I could, but only if they gave A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter, and Anthony Schlegel another year of eligibility. The Buckeyes will host what most people consider to be the best team in the MAC on Saturday and the Buckeye faithful will hope the team doesn't get caught looking ahead to next weekends monster game at Texas.
Golf
Tiger Woods - There isn't another major for him to crush everyone at this weekend, but he will be teeing off at the Deutsche Bank Championship where he's never won. My math may be rusty, but I believe that a victory there would be his sixth or seventh straight and would also officially make Mickelson curl up into the fetal position and cry.
Everyone enjoy your holiday weekend and don't forget that there is no NFL monday night game, but Florida State will be at Miami at 8 PM (EST).
