ArmchairGM Weekend Preview (8/25-8/27)

MLB

Minnesota Twins vs. Chicago White Sox - Second weekend in a row these two AL Central clubs are matching up. With Boston's recent struggles, it appears as if the AL Wild Card will go to one of these two teams.

National League West - The Padres swept the Dodgers to pull within a game of first in the West and the Reds are eyeing the top spot in the Central as the head west to take on the streaking Giants (winners of 3 in a row and 8 of their last 10). It may be Quadruple A baseball, but atleast it's exciting Quadrupla A baseball!

NFL

Green Bay Packers vs. Cincinnati Bengals - This preseason game Monday night on ESPN (8 PM EST) could answer several important questions. Is Brett Favre completely looney in believing this is the most talented team he's ever been on? Will Chad Johnson perform a TD celebration during a preseason game because it's Monday Night Football? Will a Bengal player be served with a subpoena during half-time or, even more likely, might somebody from the Bengals actually commit a felony during the game? These are things I need to know.

EPL

  • I totally blew it last week by not mentioning the start of the Premiership last week. Sorry Alex! But seeing as the league lasts 162 months or something like that, we all have plenty of time to catch up. This weekend Manchester United will try and stay perfect against Watford on Saturday and defending champ Chelsea will take on the Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.

Major League Soccer

  • League leading D.C. United attempt to finally win another regular season game after slumping for three games in a row (the Cup game they just won doesn't count). The only good news is that the team didn't lose in those three games, but tied. This weekend D.C. United will host the last place Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday.

College Football

  • One weekend till the Buckeyes kickoff here in Columbus and I couldn't be happier. We've got a #1 team, two Heisman Trophy candidates, and some of the best tailgating around. Go Bucks! The official start to the college football season is now only a week away with 16 games being played next Thursday. So everyone in the AGM College Pick'em League, make sure to get your picks in by then. (Watch, now I'll be the one to forget.)

Fantasy Football

  • This Sunday The shark and I will be drafting our teams for Fantasy Football and I can only hope he gets the #1 pick. I was saddled with it last year and in a 14 man league it is a grueling wait for your turn to come up again. It is almost demoralizing watching every player you had targeted for your second pick disappear right before your eyes. But after finishing in last in 2005, I'm ready to redeem myself in 2006. Lets put it this way, my team was so injury riddled last year and just bad at times I eventually named my team "LT is my Whole Team". Karma owes me one this year.

Mostly because of 2 reasons: 1) I know you the best in our league and 2) You're a Red Sox fan. Yes kids, baseball rivalries can carry over to football.

Chachi, your punishment is that you don't call it the EPL!! Please try to simply call it the "English Premiership". Please. For me... :) Nine months by the way... At least our season is over after 38 games, not 162, April and May (the last two months) actually tend to make a difference.

I actually am aware of how long the season is and I even have a favorite team, Bolton Wanderers, I was just trying to make a couple jokes and make it a bit more palatteabe for the non-soccer fans out there. Also, I was unaware that EPL was taboo.

I had a roommate that was a huge Liverpool fan and was always watching Fox Soccer Channel (about the only place you can catch Premiership games here in the states outside of sattelite), and I watched a few Bolton games and just really liked the players and style of play and got kind of attached to them. They always seemed like a rough and tumble team unafraid of contact and hard-nosed play. Every player went after the ball at full speed no matter the score or who they were playing.

Fair enough. Bolton have the nickname in England of "United Nations", since nearly every player in the team comes from a different country. They have improved brilliantly since Sam Allardyce came up to the Premiership with them, and that style you mentioned is a fair reflection of his apparent pitchside personality.

I just always got the feeling watching them that they were going to hurt someone or get hurt themselves. And not on purpose, but just because they played the game so hard. They're (as are many teams in the English leagues) one of those teams that treat soccer (football) as a full contact sport, and I dig that. As with all sports; if your jersey (kit, uniform, whatever) isn't dirty or bloody, then you aren't playing hard enough.

One thing you can rely on in England is hard play. In Europe, English teams get called for ridiculous things because the European way is much softer. It was sad to see last year that diving was creeping in, especially thanks to Didier Drogba at Chelsea. There is a campaign to "Beat the Cheats" where anyone with video evidence against them of diving is named in public newspapers. A good thing I think.

Also, importantly (to me at least), it's Round 14 of the FIA Formula One World Championship, the Turkish Grand Prix. After the surprisingly interesting race at the usually dull, lifeless Hungaroring, the gap is 10 points between the top two, Alonso and Schumacher. Schumacher is coming up fast as Ferrari has overtaken Renault in speed. Also, the Renault has had its' mass damper system banned for the rest of the season, helping Schumacher's advantage. It's looking like going down to the wire. Schumacher needs to win in Turkey, should do in Italy in Ferrari's homeland, and it could come down to the last three races in China, Japan and Brazil. Alonso and Schumacher are forging a great rivalry, and this year's championship could go down to the wire. Looking forward to Sunday!
