AAA Baseball

International League

Scranton/WB Red Barons

Brennan King hit for the cycle on Friday. Brennan went 4 for 5 including a grand slam. He also had 8 RBI’s in the game as the Red Barons crushed the Toledo Mud Hens 14-2.

Pacific Coast League

Nashville Sounds

Carlos Villanueva, Mike Meyers and Alec Zumwalt combined on the 5th no hitter in team history. The feat came on Saturday night where the Sounds beat the Memphis Redbirds 2-0. In his first Triple-A start, Villanueva (1-0) struck out six and walked three over six innings. After throwing 86 pitches, the 22-year-old right-hander knew he was going to be taken out, despite some objections by veteran catcher Chad Moeller.

Meyers struck out three in two perfect innings, also unaware of the no-hitter until after he exited and pitcher Justin Lehr mentioned it. It was no shock to Zumwalt, who was fully conscious of being part of history in the making.

Using fastballs and sliders to record his eighth save, Zumwalt struck out Brian Martin and got former Major Leaguer Junior Spivey to ground out before Jason Conti struck out on a checked swing on a 2-2 count.

Sacramento River Cats

Outfielder Hiram Bocachia has been named PCL player of the week. Bocachia had 4 HR’s 12RBI’s & slugged for a .357BA for the week.

Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Starting pitcher Sun-Woo Kim has been named PCL pitcher of the week. Kim pitched a complete game shutout against the Fresno Grizzlies and collected 2 wins. The native of Inchon, South Korea has won four of his last five decisions and has now won three in a row, improving his season record to 5-and-3 with a 3.73 ERA.

AA Baseball

Eastern League

Akron Aeros

Third Baseman and Eastern League All-Star Kevin Kouzmanoff is batting .419 at the break. Due to injuries, Kouzmanoff he doesn’t have enough plate appearances to qualify for the league or minor league batting title. Assuming he stays healthy, he could make a run at the magical .400 mark.

No one has hit .400 in the big leagues since Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941. Also, no one had hit .400 in the minors since Aaron Pointer hit .402 in 1961 in the now defunct Class D Salisbury in the Western Carolina League.

Texas League

Frisco RoughRiders

First baseman Nate Gold went deep 3 times, drove in 6 RBI’s and scored 4 times leading the RoughRiders to a 19-2 rout over the Tulsa Drillers.

Single A Baseball

California League

High Desert Mavericks

Hot hot hot! That’s the only word that comes to mind when describing Third Baseman Ed Lucas. In the month of July, Lucas is batting .609 (14 for 23) with 2HR’s.

LHP Daniel Christensen struck out eight in seven innings during his last start Saturday against Lake Elsinore Storm, raising his season total to 101, good for third-best in the league.

Carolina League

Frederick Keys

Catcher Juan Gutierrez went 5 for 5 on Monday. All 5 hits were for extra bases (3 doubles & 2HR’s) and got 4 RBI’s in the 8-7 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats.

Florida State League

Jupiter Hammerheads

Third Baseman Grant Psomas was named offensive player of the week. Psomas batted .357 (10 for 28) scored 6 times, had 3 doubles, smacked 3 HR’s, collected 7RBI’s & slugged for a .786 SLG.

Sarasota Reds

James Avery did something amazing to receive the pitcher of the week award. Not only did he go 2-0 for the week, but he threw for a complete game shutout in one of his starts. In his 13 innings, he only gave up 7 hits but also had a 0.00 ERA for the week.

I was going to post a story about the no-no by the Sounds. It was Villanueva's first start in Triple-A. He was brought up to the majors for about three or four starts from Double-A Huntsville then instead of being sent down to Hunstville, the team decided to send him to Nashville instead. I guess he must've learned something from his time in the bigs.

I'm sorry, because this is such a neat article and the type of stuff that I'm quite into, but I couldn't ignore the headline: MLB minors. It just struck me as funny. I wonder if we'll some of these names in the majors someday.
