The Sport Crack/ArmchairGM Collaborative Tri-Season MLB Awards

In case you hadn’t noticed due to whatever reason, the baseball season is about one third complete. If your like me and have absolutely no patience at all, than your already prognosticating about the end of season awards. Then it hit me! Let’s dish out some third of the way through the season awards!

You’ll see your standard MVP’s and Cy Young’s here, but I’ve also added a lot of other awards which the MLB should definitely consider making official. Fantasy team killer awards anyone? Some of the awards are meant to be commendable while others point out a harsh truth in the guise of an award. Unlike the MLB, there are no AL and NL versions of each award. This is because it would have probably been way too long especially considering I’m including runners up.

Instead of just basing the awards on my own opinion, which is often wrong and biased, I’ve decided to post the nominees and let everyone vote in the comments. I already have an idea of who I’m going to go with and it won’t be a by the numbers winner, but I will definitely take the massive amounts of feedback into account. Oh the suspense! Let's get started -- the award and a brief description comes first, followed by the nominees.

Better off without them award:

‘Awarded’ to the player whose team would likely have been better off had they never stepped on the field this year.

The nominees:

Jarrod Washburn (SP - SEA): 2-7 record, 6.56 ERA, 1.576 WHIP
Khalil Greene (SS - SDG): .211 batting average, .255 OBP, 5 HRs, 24 RBIs

I hate to be a stickler, but no Billy Wagner for best closer? A .36 ERA, 28 strikeouts in 24.2 innings, a .77 WHIP? No offense, but he's been miles ahead of George Sherill and he's been better than anybody (except maybe Mariano and Lidge, who also doesn't make your list).

Just a quick thought on the failure to live up to expectations player award... Although Johan might have decent stats (7-3 record, 3.20 ERA) just try and remember before the season started. People were predicting that Johan would eat the "inferior" NL alive. While he is still striking out batters in bunches, he's shown that he still has problems giving up the longball -- even in the "inferior" National League. In short, I expected better from the man who was supposed to be baseball's best pitcher, especially after dropping down a peg in terms of offensive difficulty.

A few thoughts: Why the heck is Brad Lidge not a "Shut Down Closer" nominee? He has a 0.72 ERA (2 ER) in 25 appearances with 15 saves. Francisco Rodriguez might have 24 saves, but he's only pitched 2 less innings than K-Rod, and K-Rod has an ERA of 2.00. I would say that Lidge is better than Papelbon after 1/3 of the season. Mariano and Wagner are also great picks. If you're looking for two picks, I'm going to have to say Mariano and Wagner, even if Lidge made the list.

Oh yeah, more thoughts: (my bad)

The Better Off Without Them Award: it seems like Barry Zito is going to win this thing in a landslide just because of his W-L record (probably). Although his ERA is fairly high (5.87), I think people should think about it before they vote. a 1-9 record is because of his lack of run support. Check out the numbers:

March 31st: 0
April 6th: 0
April 11th: 2
April 16: 1
April 22: 4
April 27: 1
May 7: 1
May 12: 3
May 17: 1

...And those were his first 9 losses. In those 9 games, he had a run support of 1.44 runs per game. No wonder why he had 9 losses in a row. With the offense that bad when he pitches, you'll have to be Edinson Volquez or Cliff Lee to pick up a win. So my vote went to Nick Swisher. He's just hitting above the Mendoza line right now. Jermaine Dye and Carlos Quentin are having pretty productive seasons, but I honestly think that they could do with an outfielder besides Swisher. Alexei Ramirez might be someone they could rely on. He has more RBI's than Swisher, and he's only their backup outfielder! Ramirez has 90 less at-bats than Swisher, and you could make an argument saying that Alexei is having a better season than Swisher.

He has pitched a few good games

Those are both good ideas. Providing stats is always key. I'll put them up there for the unknown fans to see. Closing the poll is another good idea. We can look back at these and either remember that certain guys were going to suck for the rest of the year or laugh or butts off saying, "How could we think that this guy was..."
