Zito Signs With Giants

Barry Zito.
Barry Zito.

Coveted free-agent pitcher Barry Zito won't be moving far for the 2007 season. Zito, who has spent the first 7 years of his career with the Oakland A's, will travel across the Bay after reportedly signing a 7-year deal with the San Francisco Giants worth something in the neighborhood of $126 million.

The lefthanded Zito, who had a 3.83 ERA in 34 starts last year, chose the Giants over the Texas Rangers, New York Mets, and Seattle Mariners. Surprisingly, given rumors that Randy Johnson is on his way out of the Big Apple, the New York Yankees never made a bid for Zito's services.

At the very least, Zito will give the Giants an ace again, after they lost Jason Schmidt earlier in the hot stove season. Zito will be formally introduced by the Giants this afternoon.

Well, so much for the Yankees theory...

Holy Crap did they overpay. A little patience could have netted him for $2-3 million less per year.

I am surprised that the Mets were not the winners. I figured they would fork over far more cash than any other team. I was wrong. But you are right, Zito is WAY, WAY, WAY overpaid.

Mets were offering in the 5 for $75 range. They had other intangibles (Great pitchers park, team that can win, Rick Peterson) that they thought would do it.

What will the new Shea be like. Will it be like Citizen Bank Park, a home run haven? Maybe Zito saw the dimensions of the new park and ran to the Giants with open arms. Then again, he is getting 50 million more from the Giants. That may have played a role as well.

Citibank Park will be similar to Shea. Very pitcher friendly

This is just insane. I mean $18M a year for a guy who just isn't that good.

AT&T should limit Zito's home runs, so that's one good thing, I guess... But the warning signs are there for Zito: his K-rate fell last year, and his walk rate is rising steadily -- meaning that he's just as likely to put up a 4.50+ ERA as a 3.83, because guys are always putting the ball in play off of him. Oh, and that 1.40 WHIP is another troubling stat. Seven years to a pitcher is insane anyway, given their inherent inconsistencies, but especially for one like Zito -- a guy who just isn't a dominant pitcher. He's a number two-type starter who's now being paid more than any number one. It's truly a crazy move.

Which is why the Yankees were never interested. Besides, they already have four overpaid pitchers on their starting staff.

Jeter's not a pitcher...

He could pitch if he wanted to, though. Jeter would simply call upon his inner clutchiness and his calm eyes, and immediately be a Cy Young candidate. Because, as you well know, Jeter is not a mere mortal. He's a god. In fact, every time Derek Jeter steps on a baseball field, a town in India sees their food troughs fill with millet. Bet you didn't know that. But it's true.

(love the Michael Jeter reference) but if Jeter pitched too, he'd be TWICE as overpaid then. Of course, he'd throw a rain-shortened 4 1/2 inning no hitter and be on Nikeaid commercial 200 times a day...

But he would use the extra time to cure twice as many cases of whale malaria, because that's what a True Yankee does. Unlike A-Rod, whom I've never seen cure a single cetacean. There are those weird things they say he does down at the aquarium, though. I wouldn't think that people do that type of thing with fish, but that's A-Rod for you.

Jeter taught Troy McClure everything he knows about fish.

I think that this signing just increases the likely hood oh the Unit deal going down in the desert. The Snakes will feel they have to keep up and over pay the Yanks for Johnson.

Nah. This is the going rate for an All-Star pitcher. Baseball has monopoly money to play with currently. This is why there is labor peace. But never fear, this will not last for long.

Zito hasnt missed a start, which is the biggest reason they signed him, and that he can perform. The NL is weaker than the AL because of the DH, and just sheer domination. Good signing, a bit over priced
