OK, you wouldn't have chosen to read this far if you didn't already know ALL 8 ways to first base, right?

I saw a boxscore one time from a high school game.

pitcher's line 1 inning pitched, 0 pitches (0strikes, 0 balls) 0 hits 0 Earned Runs AND he got the WIN!

All I ask you...

How is this possible?

Comes in with no outs in the bottom of the last inning (it's high school, that's 7th, right?) and the bases loaded and bulks in a run.

the game is tied to start the 9th inning. the home team sends in the pitcher, who has not entered the game before this. the pitcher balks a runner to first base, then picks him off. he then does this twice more (he could also balk three straight batters to load the bases and then pick them off). the pitcher's team then wins the game in the bottom of the 9th.

also, eight ways to first: hit, walk, hit by pitch, dropped third strike, catcher's interference, error, fielder's choice, and as a pinch runner.

nevermind, i guess balking the runner to first would count as balls on the scorecard. the bases would have to be loaded already when the pitcher came in during the 9th inning.

Heres another one: Pitcher comes in bases loaded, runners take there leads, hidden ball trick to get one then third-baseman throws quickly to second to get the runner then second baseman to first to get the runner there. Not only does the pitcher get out of the inning without giving up a hit but a triple play.

Y'all got it! It really happened. In 1990 a lefthanded relief pitcher comes in top of the 7th inning with bases loaded. Does a fake to third pickoff throw to first, guy on first is safe, but guy on third breaks for home, they throw him out while the guy on second goes for third and gets thrown out in a rundown - the old 1-3-2-5-6 double play. Then the guy who was still on first gets picked off for the third out. Maybe it asn't so tough to figure out but when was the last time you saw that happen? 1 IP 0 pitches 2 pickoff plays. And he got the win.
