Youse Think Youse Know Baseball? 3

by user Manny Stiles

I know Dale Long, Don Mattingly and Tino Martinez have all had streaks of 8 consecutive games with a Home Run. As far as streaks go, that's a toughy.

I'm not much for streaks as actual feats as much as "Huh, isn't that weird?" value. Kind of like when the same lottery numbers come out in back to back days, it requires a lot of luck.

Where's that Stiles guy at? He made me take down the picture of my boy Randy

So I got to thinking, what if there was a streak that accounted to a certain degree of luck and skill and just said "Dude is clearly good and/or on a REAL hot streak!"

Who has the longest hitting streak with at least two hits per game?

(Consecutive games with at least two hits)

Hell, what are the top ten longest such streaks?

I don't know the answer, I want YOU to find it out.

After getting into the eleventy billionth argument over why Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak was a load of crap. At a time before the Moon landing was staged and before the duck-and-cover method and before the H-Bomb was hypothecized and before the second Big One, New York was in a slump. Along came a kid with a legendary and equally bogus 61-game hitting streak in the Minors, popped into New York right as Lou Gehrig stepped off the big curb and as Babe Ruth was slowly being whittled away to the big voicebox in the sky. (See I can make the Golden Days sound eloquent, too) They hoped him into place. They wished his feats into accomplishments. They fantacized him into something MORE than he was... for instance, an actual boat, a Clipper per se... could steal more bases than Joe D.

I'm not saying he sucked. He was very good. He just wasn't as great as an overwhelming majority thinks. And to do something so many times in a row... well, it requires a lot of good luck. DiMaggio had plenty of that. He's what Derek Jeter wishes he could be... (and NO way Jeter could hang on to Scarlett Johannsen for 9+ months outlasting Joe D's sad sack marriage to Marilyn Monroe)

Probably finding out the three hits streak and four hits streak would be interesting too... and just to see if you're reading, Am I a Blue link or Red? couldn't sniff Tim McCarver's jocksweat adorned microphone at sucking.

And I honestly have no idea who the record holder is. But I do know Rennie Stennett holds the record for consecutive seven-hit games. I'm guessing a bunch of guys tied for the 6-hit games streak (Long live Kevin Seitzer!)

What's in it for you?

And if Joe DiMaggio tops the consecutive two-hit games list too, THEN I'll shut up about him being so skewingly over-rated forever...

(legal disclaimer - as a Yankee, he still will fundamentally "suck" forever)

This is quite an interesting one. I'd have a guess at someone like Ichiro Suzuki. As a random guess. Didn't Ty Cobb get loads of hits? Maybe him. Suzuki or Cobb.

If it isn't DiMaggio, my next guess goes to Denny Lyons in 1887 [1]

Found it [3]:

Its Rogers Hornsby, who hit 2 or more hits in 13 straight game (and in 13 straight days) for the Cardinals in 1923.

The Waner streak was extra base hits, not 2+ hits

Rogers Hornsby as great as he was... Is it possible he's even better than history recalls? How many people put him in "greatest hitter" category? He may have been the best righty hitter in the game's history...

I don't know to much about him, but the fact that he recorded 2 or more hits in 13 straight days/games is really something special. I'm suprised it isn't that well known

Hank Aaron was also a pretty good right handed hitter too. Don't know who was better but I'm sure it's close

In the past 50 years; Tony Perez had exactly 2 hits in 11 straight games for the Redlegs in August of the 1973 season. That is the most in the relatively modern baseball era.
