Your Worst TV Sports Surprises

by user SuperFrankieLampard

I just turned the channel to ESPN2 to catch an MLS game and was horrified and shocked to find instead the end of a WNBA playoff game. This is one of the worst tv sports surprises I've ever encountered. What are some of yours? I mean the times when you turn it to a channel expecting to see something you're interested in, and instead you get something else entirely. Examples could be, say, a WNBA game instead of football, or women's bowling instead of day game baseball, etc. Leave your experiences in the comments.

Maybe every single night during the NHL lockout - I would work until maybe 10, then come home hoping to maybe catch a late basketball game. Instead I'd either get a tape-delay of Sweedish hockey or the "Full Tilt Poker Challenge". One time, now that I think about it, I was watching a tape delay of the "America Bowl" (Falcons / Steelers, I think, from Japan) and ESPN showed the final score of the game during the ticker on the bottom.

Um, a mixup of WNBA and MLS isn't exactly the Heidi Bowl. ESPN2 probably just figured no one would notice.

If a (WNBA/MLS) game is played in the woods and a tree falls and it kills the coach, does it make the news? (Or something like that)

I know, nobody really cares about the MLS, and it was only delayed because the WNBA game ended late or something. Still, I didn't turn the channel expecting to watch a WNBA game. That reminds me, one time at a bar with some friends we asked the waitress if we could get the channel changed to "the basketball game." I don't remember the game, but it was during the NBA playoffs. The channel was quickly changed... to a WNBA regular-season game. We were all too shocked to point out the error for a little while.

I turned on expecting to see an Ice Hockey game at the Winter Olympics, only to see highlights of the Women's Mogels. Considering there were no Brits in either, put GB has at least some sort of Ice Hockey fan base (however limited), I was quite annoyed to see Mogels when we were being told that Canada-Italy was 1-1... or Latvia lead the USA.

The Mets launched their new TV network this year, and, for a few innings at one point early this season, accidentally replayed a game from 1985 instead of broadcasting the live game.

I turned on MTV hoping to listen to music and found a dramamentury about a football team, then I turned to ESPN and a music video was playing...WTF? I used to be in touch, now I'm glad I'm not!

Last year I was watching the classic Agassi-Blake US Open match on USA. I'm on the west coast, but I get DirecTV, so USA is on the east coast feed for me. They were well into the dramatic fifth set when an episode of Law & Order suddenly began on USA. It turns out that on the east coast, CBS picked up the rest of the match because their late-night US Open coverage had begun. But out here, even for DirecTV viewers, it was still three hours until the CBS coverage. Cable viewers out here could continue watching the match, since they had the west coast feed for USA. But I was in a bizarre no-man's land.

How about every single time I turn on ESPN these days? Dominoes? Poker? This crap instead of major league baseball or even pre-season football? They don't carry regular season college baseball, but they carry these stupid pseudo-sports. ESPN has become a total joke.

Oh, here's another - I lived in Hawaii for 8 months, and I was surprised to find out when I got there that Monday Night football is reaired at 8:00 local time, which is about an hour after the game has actually ended. This meant that on Mondays, if I wanted to watch the game, I had to start avoiding ESPN and sports websites at about 3:00 in the afternoon.

During fantasy drafts, i love to have sporting events on. Like, during my baseball draft, i had the duke game on, so i was very pleased. But yesterday, during the football draft, I turned on nbc expecting to see da raiders, and instead it was olympic swimming. then, later on, i turned on espn in hopes of a night game (ie. boston game, or football game) and instead had a double dosage of womens lacross and womens championship soccer. ZZzzzzz

My closest example would be the year I turned on the TV to watch the Super Bowl, only to find that the power was out. The even closer example would be when I turned on the tv to watch a Nationals game, but instead was subjected to a Ravens preseason game.

you didn't notice the power was out before you tried to turn the TV on?

I arrived home, wandered inside, and tried to turn on the tv. First thing I did, try to turn on the tv, didn't stop to turn on the lights or anything else.

I once locked myself out of the house during the Super Bowl. Not the fault of any network but it still sucked.
