Three final vote candidates of the National League are going to the All-Star game, as we learned that Arizona Diamondbacks' ace, Brandon Webb will be replacing Colorado Rockies' reliever, Brian Fuentes, and Houston Astros' Roy Oswalt will be replacing John Smoltz. The two pitchers got in due to the player ballots.
The reason why I'm surprised is because Pittsburgh Pirates' Tom Gorzelanny is not in there. Let's look at the stats this year for the four pitchers that didn't receive the final vote in the National League:
Tom Gorzelanny is 9-4 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and is, by far, the best pitcher they have. He also has a 3.10 ERA and a 1.244 WHIP which is not bad at all.
Carlos Zambrano is 10-6 wth the Chicago Cubs, a better offensive team than the Pirates, and it shows because how can you have a 4.04 ERA and a 1.314 WHIP and still manage to have more wins than someone like Tom Gorzelanny? You can't. He's also walked 51 batters already. Does that say something for the people who voted for Zambrano a couple of days ago?
Roy Oswalt is 7-5 with the Astros. He has a 3.52 ERA, only 89 strikeouts, 43 walks, and a 1.391 WHIP. Who has better stats? Gorzelanny or Oswalt? I'm gonna say Gorzelanny to you players that voted for Oswalt.
Brandon Webb:8-6 with a 3.27 ERA with the D-Backs, as well as a 1.290 WHIP. He led the NL Final Vote candidates in the strikeouts category with 104, but he also walked 45.
Gorzelanny is even better than the two other pitchers that got in and I must say that the players who voted have no idea who they're really voting for. Tom Gorzelanny deserves to be in the All-Star game, and it's a shame that Oswalt is in instead of him. He has given up less walks than Chris Young for crying out loud. Counting out Young, Gorzelanny is better than Zambrano, Oswalt, and Webb in walks surrendered, earned runs, and is only behind Zambrano in hits surrendered, and only behind Webb in walks surrendered.
This is to the players who voted voted for Oswalt and Zambrano mostly: what were you guys thinking?
