Young, Oswalt, AND Webb in...

11
Vote

by user Romiezzo

Three final vote candidates of the National League are going to the All-Star game, as we learned that Arizona Diamondbacks' ace, Brandon Webb will be replacing Colorado Rockies' reliever, Brian Fuentes, and Houston Astros' Roy Oswalt will be replacing John Smoltz. The two pitchers got in due to the player ballots.

The reason why I'm surprised is because Pittsburgh Pirates' Tom Gorzelanny is not in there. Let's look at the stats this year for the four pitchers that didn't receive the final vote in the National League:

Tom Gorzelanny is 9-4 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and is, by far, the best pitcher they have. He also has a 3.10 ERA and a 1.244 WHIP which is not bad at all.

Carlos Zambrano is 10-6 wth the Chicago Cubs, a better offensive team than the Pirates, and it shows because how can you have a 4.04 ERA and a 1.314 WHIP and still manage to have more wins than someone like Tom Gorzelanny? You can't. He's also walked 51 batters already. Does that say something for the people who voted for Zambrano a couple of days ago?

Roy Oswalt is 7-5 with the Astros. He has a 3.52 ERA, only 89 strikeouts, 43 walks, and a 1.391 WHIP. Who has better stats? Gorzelanny or Oswalt? I'm gonna say Gorzelanny to you players that voted for Oswalt.

Brandon Webb:8-6 with a 3.27 ERA with the D-Backs, as well as a 1.290 WHIP. He led the NL Final Vote candidates in the strikeouts category with 104, but he also walked 45.

Gorzelanny is even better than the two other pitchers that got in and I must say that the players who voted have no idea who they're really voting for. Tom Gorzelanny deserves to be in the All-Star game, and it's a shame that Oswalt is in instead of him. He has given up less walks than Chris Young for crying out loud. Counting out Young, Gorzelanny is better than Zambrano, Oswalt, and Webb in walks surrendered, earned runs, and is only behind Zambrano in hits surrendered, and only behind Webb in walks surrendered.

This is to the players who voted voted for Oswalt and Zambrano mostly: what were you guys thinking?

Well, I was hoping Chris Young would get in from day one. i was a bit surprised at how quckly they names Oswalt to the game (before Webb), since Oswalt's season hasn't been that great. If you notice though, the NL players picked poorly first go around, so it's not super surprising that it happened a second time. The question how becomes by how much will the AL win by?

Oswalt does NOT deserve to be in the All-Star Game, simply put...IMO. He, as well as many other Astros players, are having bad years. Ensberg, Berkman, Biggio (average). The only person who has done good is Lidge, one of the best set up men in the game right now.

How John Maine didn't get in, but Oswalt and Hamels did, I don't get. Young shouldn't have been 30th-Man either -- he should have gotten in.

Chris Young definitly deserves to be in, but so John Maine, like you said. 10-4, 2.71 ERA, 1.140 WHIP, 93 Ks, only 85 hits surrenders. That's another one you can add in your vlog, Pat Dean...

Young should have been in there in the first place. I thought he had a chance at being the STARTER.

It'd probably be between him and Peavy. I thought he was definitely in as well, then when I looked at the roster, I was astonished!! How could they have not put Chris Young in the first place? He's better than anyone else (besides Peavy by just a snithch) on the roster.

Yeah...where the hell is John Maine? Teammate Ian Snell is having a better year than Gorzelanny, by the way. I don't really have a problem with the Oswalt selection, as he's a better pitcher than most of these other guys. This is just my opinion, but I think prior performance should be a small factor in the voting...it would be kinda like leaving Johan Santana off the team for Jeremy Guthrie because Guthrie's ERA was half a run lower.

Shoot, how could I forget Ian Snell. If there's one thing that is going to kill the NL in the All-Star game, it's probably going to be the pitching, and the managers should know that there should be better pitchers in the ASG. Gorz, Snell, Maine, who else?

Completely agree...if the NL had put their best roster on the field (i.e., no Freddy Sanchez or Jose Valverde), they would have had a shot, but this team just isn't nearly as good as the AL's. Look at the AL pitching...it's incredible.

Are you complaining about Valverde (one of the best closers this year) and not Fuentes who just lost his closer spot in Colorado.

Valverde's been good, but I'd much rather see a top starter like Maine or Snell on the team.

That's basically why I made this topic. Zambrano doesn't deseve to be in there, but Chris Young is in, which is great. Webb is in, which is, ehh.. there could definitely be better, and Oswalt is in, who doesn't deserve to be in. Tom Gorzelanny has had a pretty good year this year, and definitely deserved to be in there more than OSWALT, and Brandon Webb IMO...
