You Think Youse Know Baseball? 4

by Manny Stiles

From the self-promoting bastard that brought you this pile of crap and also this dungheap of discombobulated words.

You think Youse Know?

Another version of - I don't know if it's ever happened in the bigs, but it's happened in a game I played.

How can a pitcher get credit for an unassisted out on a strikeout?

While you ponder that...

A Tad of Trivia

Can you name the seven players in MLB history to have at least 50 Doubles in one season without amassing at least 90 RBI in any season during their career?

People that quote Biggio's statistical "accomplishments" better be ready for the backlash of rationality - Biggio compares favorably to All-Time greats AND players that blow!
People that quote Biggio's statistical "accomplishments" better be ready for the backlash of rationality - Biggio compares favorably to All-Time greats AND players that blow!

Hints

Hint One - FIVE of the seven are currently active!

Hint Two - Johnny Frederick is the ONLY guy on this list that finished playing before you were born - and the only guy you never heard of.

Hint Three - the other non-active player is in the Hall of Fame already.

Extra Credit

Extra Credit 1 - if you can name which player in MLB history is the only guy to hit over 50 Doubles AND have more Doubles than RBI! (54-51)

Extra Credit 2 - Who has the lowest career batting average of all these players?

Foul ball due to bunting with two strikes?

no, that's just a strikeout (as long as it's caught)

How could it be caught? ie. 0-2 count - bunt attempt, foul ball, out?

My bad I didn't read what you wrote all the way. It's still officially a strikeout, swinging.

A pitcher gets an unassisted out on a strikeout if it is a dropped 3rd strike and the batter walks out of the batters box and does not run to first.

Rule 6.09 says the batter is out but doesn't say if anyone gets credit for the putout other than the strikeout. So, no...

hard to hit 50 doubles in 52 career games - but he does have less than 90 rbi!

Biggio IS one of them! Twice hit 50+ doubles and never had 90 RBI in a season... Your other answers sucked. Were you also guessing the Second Extra Credit question?

Another Hint - 3 of the 5 current players (and only 7 of them exist) with 50 2B seasons but no 90 RBI seasons were ALL-STARS this season (the other two were also All-Stars in other years)

Ha ha! Eckstein has only twice cracked the HALF of 50 2Bs plateau (twice with 26 in one season) and will never sniff 90 RBI for a season

and Sizemore and Roberts still have time to get off the list; Biggio, Sanchez, Grudz... not so much.

Grudz had 54 doubles and only 51 RBI; "Helmet" has the lowest career BA. As for the unassisted K, I'm thinking the pitcher threw two strikes, the catcher had to come out of the game, the old pitcher takes over at catcher, and a new pitcher throws strike three. Since the old P threw 2 of the 3 strikes, he gets the K and the putout. Am I close?

Holy crap, we have a winner!

Just want to reiterate that Biggio is the worst of this particular historically important peer group.

I like your answer to the putout, and I have pitched and caught in the same inning before but it's not right.

Wade Boggs says what?

OK, here's the answer:

Strike Three swinging on a high fastball when the catcher was "setting up" for a curveball outside. Pitch was never touched by bat or catcher but hit the Umpire square in the facemask and bounced right to me (the pitcher) along the first base line where I tagged the runner who was too confused at what transpired to run.

My catcher was pissed at the ump for leaning all over him and not getting calls so he came out to the mound mad as hell and demanded I throw the high fastball "no matter what" he called for and he would setup way outside to expose the umpire (who would be guessing offspeed pitch with the catcher's "body language".

I drilled the ump right in the facemask at about 92 mph (yes, for real) and it just so happened that the batter swung and missed and that it caromed right to me...

K, 1, Unassisted putout.

The "official scorer" said he wouldn't call it a WP or PB since it was really neither (it never went past the catcher's box.)

We started getting more pitches called our way the rest of the game =)

My sporting achievements are as weird and dubious as I am: I hit a lot of batters. I once also struck out a guy and broke his wrist in the same pitch. He swung at a ball for strike three that hit him on the wrist (I was TRYING to hit him)

Then later in the game when I did hit him with a pitch (in the ribs), I hit him again in the ribs with an "errant" pickoff throw when he went to first base on the HBP. He got X-Rays after the game and only his wrist was broken.

We won the game.

TB, I didn't hit guys because I was wild - I had good control, which is why I hit guys. When they know you throw a lot of strikes, they can hit more comfortably. When they are a tad "prepared to get stuck" they lose a bit of confidence and that's all hitting really is! Good hitting is timing and good pitching is disrupting a hitter's timing.

The first guy to teach me to pitch grew up in Tommy Lasorda's neighborhood in Norristown, PA. He made me hit batters or throw 40 ft curveballs and 80 foot sliders) whenever he thought I was throwing my fastball too flat. Even behind in the count.

What would have been really cool is if there was a runner on third, he broke for home and you tagged him out, an unassisted double play by a pitcher. Now, you don't see that every day.

If you get two strikes on a hitter, and then they take too long standing outside the batters' box, the umpire can just call a strike on them, which would have to then be a strikeout. I guess the catcher would still probably get the putout on that though...
