You Suck!! The Biggest Sports Collapse Ever

13
Vote

by Jamel

British Open was on this weekend- not sure if anyone cares or if anyone watched it.

But thought this could be interesting. They kept harshing on the frenchman Vandeveld and his collapse on the 1999 British Open- up by 3, one hole to go.

So I ask you this- what do YOU consider the biggest sports collapse ever- individual or team????

Vandeveld is one of the biggest collapses ever. He completly lost control of himself on 18, and proceded to go through the worse 30 mins of golf in Open history.

There was also the Argentine guy - Romero, who also double bogeyed on 18 yesterday. If he had parred, he would have won.

Yeah but that's hardly considered a meltdown or a collapse- hell in that case we could include the many many many Phil Mickelson collapses- I smiled for days when even he himself said "I am such an idiot!"- god I hate him!

Biggest collapse ever? I think a collapse over a longer period of time...something you can feel for days would be larger... plus, this is golf...and the dude was french!

There are loads of these:
  • 1935 German Grand Prix - Manfred von Brauchitsch led Tazio Nuvolari by 30 seconds going into the last lap, but lost.
  • Snooker:
    • Paul Hunter led 15-9 and 16-14 in the 2003 World Championship Semi Final, but Ken Doherty won 17-16.
    • Steve Davis led Dennis Taylor 8-0 in the 1985 World Final - but lost 18-17.
    • Matthew Stevens led Shaun Murphy 12-7 this year in the Quarter Finals, but Murphy won 13-12.
    • Cliff Thorburn led 9-2 in the First Round in 1992, but lost 10-9.
  • Association Football - Manchester United were 1-0 down to Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions' League Final after 91 minutes, but won 2-1!
  • Cricket - In 1981, England were following on, and 135 behind with only 3 wickets left, but Ian Botham made a century and managed to set Australia 130 to win. England bowled them out for 118, to win by 11 runs. In >1,800 Test Matches, only 3 games have ever been won when a side followed on - that was the first.
I could go on...

When talking about Champions League finals, it's hard to mention 2005, when AC Milan was up 3-0 on Liverpool before Liverpool scored 3 goals in the second half within 10 minutes. Remember, this is soccer I'm talking about so a 3-0 lead is like 10-0 in baseball.

I'm glad Garcia lost. That's what he gets for talkin smack about Tiger Woods. But hardly the biggest collapse ever. Biggest collapse is the Yankees in '04 followed by the Blazers losing with a 30+ point lead in the 4th quarter against the Lakers in the playoffs (I forget what year).

No one said that Garcia was a collapse- not at all- I'm not even talking about this British Open- I just thought it was harsh that 8 years later all they focused on was Vandevelds collapse- I think this will go on year after year after year- imagine being that guy!!! Ha ha - that's what you get for being french!!!

Thats what he gets for using that damn belly putter. A collapse can also be the Cubs after the Bartman ball. They were still in that game but fumbled it away. The 86 Mets had another game after Buckner missed that grounder but the rest of the team collapsed on them.

In Triple Play '02... I, as the Yankees, trailed the Red Sox 14-4 going into the bottom of the ninth. With some clutch hitting, wayward pitching, and 3 errors, 2 of which were from Manny Ramirez in OF... I won 15-14 with a walk off Grand Slam. I saved the box score to disk on my old computer...

You want a collapse...alright, this probably isn't one but...a few years ago (2 or 3?) the saints and panthers were playing and the saints ran one back on the last play...then, to tie it John Carney had to hit an extra point...and missed...that was amazing

The 2004 Yanks was the worst ever. But I still have a hard time wrapping my head around the 2007 Pats in the AFC title game, allowing a team to score 32 points IN ONE HALF and coughing up 15-point halftime lead. It's not as monumental as Van de Velde and the Yanks, but that one still sits with me.

The Cardinals on MNF; that wasn't so much a collapse as a bad team finally playing the way they typically did and a good team finding itself.

Uhh...hmm...2005 NLCS...when Pujols in game 6 launched one...LAUNCHED ONE off of Brad Lidge in the 9th...the seismic occurance that was the pujols blast may have in fact ended Brad Lidge's career...I even called that...I'm still proud...

There will never, ever, be a bigger collapse than the 2004 ALCS where the New York Yankees blown that 3-0 series lead so hard, they couldn't have choked it any worse than that.

Yeah but they are the Yankees- what can you say???- they suck!!!! And I just have to say it- when it comes to "choking" that's what they do best.... or should they say they are experts at "not choking"??? I heard that A-Rod is responsible for Jeter not having a gag reflex- boi yeah!!!!

Looking into baseball history the only real complete and total collapse was the 1964 Phillies. With that multi game lead in the last week and completely falling apart leads one to believe that this season shows to baseball fans the biggest choke in professional sports. In all sports there has been choke jobs, the US Basketball game against the Russians even through the refs gave the Russians the game, Brazil against France in the World Cup being a 2 goal favorite and losing 4-0 so the bookies lost a lot and I was in Paris during that game and all kinds of French fans were looking at each other funny and later it was learned that 45 minutes before game time at 3 or 4 betting parlors in Europe 50 million dollars were layed on France to win and with the odds being played at 4 to 1 with the score ending 4-0 that means over 200 million was lost on Brazil. But even with all these kinds of choke jobs nothing simply compares to the 64 Phillies blowing that huge lead during the last week of the season.

Is Garcia the new Phil M? That is the question on a lot of people minds right now. Did he choke the British Open on the last hole. With only to make a short putt to finish the event he didn't and it forced a playoff which we all know he lost or gave away whichever way you want to put it. But it does seem that he has had a lot of trouble finishing big events, it could be his youth but that only goes so far because he has been in the spotlight for a long time both here and in Europe so I guess only time will tell and let us wish better luck to him in the future.

I dont' see missing one putt in golf necessarily a "choke"- I guess we can look at this in 2 ways-

1) Garcia can't close the deal when it counts- (just ask doubledee :) ) Pressure putt, what around 10 feet and he missed- but it diffinately wasn't a gimme or a sure thing- now if he did sink that putt Harrington would have looked like the guy who "choked" big time putting it in the drink 2X 2) If Garcia was up by a few strokes and blew it he would have pulled a van de veld but that wasn't the case.

Garcia is alright- he ain't the new Phil though- nope Phil is the ultimate doughboy- his brain is all soft and squishy- glad he missed the cut!!
