The Mets have fired hitting coach Rick Down and replaced him with Rickey Henderson, according to WFAN and other various sources.

That's right, Rickey effing Henderson.

I've been crying for Down to be gone for a long time. He doesn't seem to very vocal from what I've seen for the past few years watching Mets games, although you can't argue with last year's results.

I hope Rickey doesn't get too cocky with the Mets.

But I am on the record for being 100% for this move.

The Greatest of All Time having an energetic, borderline spastic protege that could one day surpass him? It's a cool story, but it sounds like they hired Henderson just to make headlines. Henderson coaching Reyes? It's almost too perfect.

Surpass??? Puhleeze. Ricky broke the stolen base record to the point that it would be like someone hitting 1100 home runs. Ricky has several seasons with over 100 steals, a number noone has approached in years, and Ricky continued to be among the league leaders in stolen bases well into his 40's. Most players have their stolen base totals go down as they get older. Not to mention Ricky is, I believe second all-time in walks and has something ridiculous like 70 home runs to lead off a game. Ricky was the complete package.

Right now, at age 24 Joes Reyes has 202 steals, so even if he steals 45 more this year he will still be short of 250.

At age 24 Henderson had already stolen 427 bases. He also stole 109 bases after turning 40.

With that kind of a head start, combined with that kind of longevity, the word that comes to mind is impossible.

he already has, not on a full-season basis, but he already has. and keep in mind it's not just reyes, but indeed the entire team he will now be coaching.

Congrats to the Mets for getting him. I'm sure you're gonna see a lot of better offensive numbers for the Mets now, Carlos Delgado hopefully being the main one for you guys...

They're just keeping him around so Julio Franco has someone to hang with.

Um...Ricky is kind of an idiot. Can't say I'm excited about this...at all. If he was just an stolen base coach, that'd be fine.

Rickey is the reason Jose Reyes knows how to take a pitch.

Ricky pretends to be an idiot. He's one of the best players in the game. I think this was a good move.

He'd be much better suited as 1st base coach. He can read pitchers, he can give advise on taking leads, can spot flaws in pitchers delivery to the plate, etc. I just don't like him as the hitting coach. But that's just my opinion.

I agree...The phillies added Davey Lopes and its paid dividends...they're 6th and SBs...and don't have 1 player who represents almost half of them (Meaning of the mets 106 SBs...Reyes has 46...that's 44%...ridiculous)

Actually...with that in mind...the mets have 30 more SBs than anyone else...how much more could henderson do to improve that?

Do you think Ricky talks in the third person when coaching? Ricky thinks so.
