You've got to be kidding me Alexi!

Former US soccer player and current president of the LA Galaxy, Alexi Lalas, said that the only reason that the English Premiership is successful, is because of American-style marketing. So I'm guessing they didn't use the same style for the MLS. Lalas also said that the Premiership is "inferior" to the MLS. Uh, Alexi, a good JV team could run right over a couple of MLS squads. Top flight football in England has been there for decades, the soccer craze here is not even close to anything England produces. Lalas said that those who are quick to criticize the MLS haven't seen the league. He also suggested that the MLS was considered "second class" to the EPL, and the British papers were highly unimpressed with the Galaxy's 3-2 win over Real Salt Lake. Maybe because Real hasn't won a game yet!

Alexi even compared England's World Cup success with the US in the past 4 world cups. One quarterfinal appearance for the US, but 2 for England, and Lalas said that it was respectable. Yeah Lalas, what happened last year buddy? I'm assuming that he's only comparing with the last 4 World Cups because there was a period from 1954-1986 where the US never qualified for the World Cup, while England had already won one in 1966.

So to you Alexi Lalas, that's probably the stupidest statements I've ever heard of, and if you think that the MLS is superior to the English Premier League, you've lost your mind. Because the fans and players are passionate in the Premiership. The MLS (outside of Toronto FC), has no fan support at all, and the players are less than stellar.

American Football and European football are the same in this like...but..

This is like saying a good JV football team could beat an NFL Europe team...and i beg to differ

Secondly, European League X thrives because of, not marketing per se, but marketing now because they have the talent...it will be quite a few years (or never) before the MLS gets that kind of talent league-wide...

Obviously the Premier League is better but MLS is getting more competitive. Their All-Stars beat Chelsea 1-0 in a friendly in 2006 albeit a pre-season warmup for Chelsea. The Chicago Fire and D.C. United did not embarass themselves against AC Milan and Chelsea. The U.S. soccer u-21 club has had some good results too.

The thing about the British is that they are very snooty about futbol without producing much in the way of results. Do I think that the MLS is on par with the EPL. Probably not. Do I think that some MLS teams could be competitive in the EPL. Yes. Do I think that on a national level the US national team is as good as England's, absolutely. Its not like England is struggling to qualify for Euro 2008 or anything. Its not like England recently tied Israel is Euro 2008 qualifier.

I think the England national team ON PAPER is better. Same with the Premiership. I think that any Premiership team could beat a MLB team. I think a Championship team (21-44 ranked) would be a good matchup though.

England is struggling to qualify for Euro 2008. But I'd fancy my chances against the Americans. Israel, you may mock, but have three Premiership players in their team. They're by no means bad.

Last time England played the States, England won 2-0.

You do realize England competing against Portugal, France, Germany, and Spain is different from the US going up against El Salvador, Canada,Honduras, and Guatemala right? Besides, the US has struggled throughout the Gold Cup, against teams they should be running over with a tractor.

The FIFA Rankings are royally screwed up. Plus the reason why England is struggling to qualify is that Steve McLaren doesn't know what he is doing.

Congratulations, Alexi Lalas, you are the unofficial winner of the WOW of the week!!!!!!!!!!!! But what really left me rolling on the floor with laughter as I read it on the computer and then howling as I went to the bathroom and then still laughing on my way to class was when he said that David Beckham would have as just as big an impact in his sport as Tiger and MJ did in theirs. Now THAT is being stunningly and embarassingly full of crap.

Obviously Alexi expects the critical and rational thinkers of this website to drink the marketing Kool-aid for the upcoming David Beckham marketing campaign for the MLS. Let's see the wonderful "American-style marketing" theory work for the MLS. And when it dosen't work, Alexi Lalas will be bitching for a different reason...foot in mouth disease.
