This time Mauricio Macri won on the political front as he won the elections for mayor of the city of Buenos Aires.
Macri, in his second try, won the runoff election in the City of Buenos Aires with a comfortable 22-point margin over rival Daniel Filmus. This makes Macri´s party (Pro) a much stronger opponent to incumbent Nestor Kirchner and his Justicialista Party (aka Peronistas). Not even teh president´s involvement in the campaign the past few days help Filmus from making any type of dent in his deficit.
The first round of voting held on June 3rd saw Macri obtain a whopping 45% of the votes while Filmus could only muster up 23. Macri was only 60,000 votes away from taking the election in one fll swoop. Now Boca´s president will take over a city on December 10th plagued by crime, corruption, health care problems, as well as transit and educational strikes. Seems like a ¨piece of cake for a man who was under the spotlight constantly as he was the man that ran Argentina´s most popular club.
He has already discarded the possibility of running for president later on in October as he will be a key member of the opposition´s platform.
Who said football and politics don´t mix?
