Yankees to Offer A-Rod $30,000,000 Per Year

17
Vote

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the New York Yankees have asked to meet with third baseman Alex Rodriguez, presumably to offer him a contract extension that would exceed the $27 million his current contract calls for next season.

The offer is rumored to be for something in the range of five years -- in addition to the three years Rodriguez is already under contract for, from 2008-10 -- and for $30+ million a year. If the Yankees' extension offer is for around $150 million over five years, then Rodriguez would be owed about $230 million over the next eight seasons.

Of course, A-Rod's agent, Scott Boras, has stated his intention to explore the willingness of other teams to buy A-Rod's services, so the meeting may never materialize. But if it does, sources say the Yankees are prepared to offer him a record-setting new contract in order to keep the likely AL MVP in the Big Apple.

$30,000,000 to not perform in the playoffs and to not make it to a World Series for a 3rd year in a row. Nice concept.

He's actually never made it to the World Series, which means that this year is the 4th year in a row the Yanks aren't playing in the World Series. I thought A-Rod did better his last couple games against Cleveland though. And he used to do pretty good in the postseason, until the 2004 ALCS. Check out his stats for the postseason.

To be fair, A-rod was the reason they even made it to the playoffs... everyone puts so much pressure on Alex, so he cant preform under the stress... Give the guy a break, he is still going to go down as probably the best player in history (with or without a ring)...

Even though you're right about Alex, Falcon, you can't just depend on stats (I've said this before). I mean, sure, A-Rod has the numbers, but you also have to look at how he's affecting the team besides his stats: he doesn't have the best attitude, he wants a HUGE contract every year, and he doesn't appreciate what other people do.

This is true... I'd never want a team I like to sign him... I'd don't think he necessarily think he makes a team better (actually he does the opposite in my opinion), but in the Yankees case this year, they would never have made it to the postseason without him...

Yes, definitely. Actually, you're right about the fact that A-Rod makes a team worse. Just look at the 2000 Seattle Mariners and compare it to the 2001 Mariners: 91-71 in 2000 and 116-46 in 2001; 2003 and 2004 Texas Rangers: 71-91 to 89-73.

The best player in baseball doesn't make a team better? How does that make sense? Romie: Can you give me an example of A-Rod "not appreciating what other people do" or "having a bad attitude"?

Example: Deciding on who should be shortstop for the Yankees. Joe Torre made the decision to move him over to third base. That's an example about his bad attitude. An example about him not appreciating what other people do: the fact that Derek Jeter was captain of the team and had control over the Yankees instead of A-Rod. He complains if things don't get his way.

Romi can make those statements because he knows A-Rod personally, and as a licensed psychologist, he also knows exactly what makes A-Rod tick.

Oh, wait.

(By the way, "not appreciating what other people do" and "having a bad attitude" -- sounds more like Derek "The Diva" Jeter to me. Just saying.)

Haven't you guys heard the quote, "A-Rod is a crybaby"? I'm sure many of you, or many people you've known have said that before. Both A-Rod and Jeter have their issues, Davis, and I was wrong for saying that about A-Rod, but I think you know what I was at least TRYING to say.

Exactly, which is why he doesn't have a WS ring, at least not yet. If it wasn't a team sport, I'm sure he would have plenty of rings. That's exactly why I provided the stats about the Mariners and the Rangers. I'm sure the Yankees will get back to 100 wins if A-Rod doesn't sign with the Yankees.

Example: Deciding on who should be shortstop for the Yankees. Joe Torre made the decision to move him over to third base. That's an example about his bad attitude. That counts against A-Rod? He was the better SS, but he moved over to third to play for a better team and because Jeter was the veteran/captain. Isn't that a positive, not a negative?

Actually Romi, I don't think the Yankees will get back to 100 wins any time in a while... first off, they aren't as talented without A-rod (I think the Yankees are the only team that is better with Alex than without him)... Next off, the AL is more balanced with much better teams than in the past few year; this makes winning a lot of games more difficult... so without A-rod this team (and only this team) isn't as good without him...

I know what you're saying, Romi, I just get a lot of laughter out of the A-Rod = bad teammate/choker, Jetes = clutchmeister/fearless calm-eyed leader thing. Here are two quotes from after the Indians series defeat...

Player 1: "It's on me. Whatever blame you put on me, that's fine. The most courageous group of guys, that I've ever played with ... No explanations. No excuses."

Player 2: "Sometimes you do well and you lose, and you don't do well and you win. It doesn't really make a difference. We didn't get the job done and that's the only thing that really matters."

I'm sure you can guess which is which. A-Rod stood in front of the press and put the loss on himself, knowing that he'd get killed in the papers, while Jeter shied away from the blame (muttering about how the breaks didn't go their way), secure in his True Yankee-ness no matter how many DPs he grounded into. Who's the better teammate again?

Falcon, I'm sure that's what many people said when Randy Johnson, Ken Griffey Jr., and A-Rod left Seattle, and look what happened. They ended up tying the all-time record for the most amount of wins in a season.

To Davis: OH. I get it now. I don't think Jeter is the clutchmeister/fearless calm-eyed leader; I just excluded him so I wouldn't go off topic. ;)

Is this the same Buster Olney who "broke" a story this week about the Dodgers being interested in Joe Girardi as their manager despite the fact the job isn't open?

Common sense says they'd offer him, nice job on the scoop, Buster. They'll offer him the same way they offered Torre, an offer he can refuse.

"Hey, ARod, George here." "Look, bro, thirty mil's not a problem, thing is we can't sign anyone else." "It's going to be you, Jeets, Damon, and a half dozen guys off the waiver wire." "Our goal next season is to finish ahead of Tampa."

ARod: "Thanks, but no thanks."

A-Rod or any other player does not deserve $30 million. What if he gets injured and misses most of the season? They should have learned from Carl Pavano that you can't pay that kind of money and get anything in return. Granted that if healthy A-Rod may be the best player in baseball but would like to know how much an at bat he would make if he gets 500 at bats next season.

$60,000 per at bat on 500 a season. A-Rod could fund an entire NHL team for a year, if he plays for two seasons with the current salary cap structure. And if he plays for four, he can fund an entire NFL team for a year.

Thanks Alex...I have made a total of about $600 all this year so he makes 100 times more each time he would bat if he signs for $30 million. If he goes bankrupt someday will never have any pity for him. He probably can make $50,000 interest on each million he saves and may get better rate for investing such a huge amount. I made a total of less than a million in 44 years of working.

Trizz...am thinking the same thing...my dad cared nothing about baseball so I retired at 13 years old. My folks would come to one Little League game a year no matter what but not one more game than that.
