New York Yankees outfielder, Gary Sheffield, will undergo surgery on his left wrist that will keep him out of commission for two months. Yankees GM, Brian Cashman held a press conference on Thursday to share the news. Cashman said the surgery would not be season-ending, but would take some time to heal.
Sheffield originally hurt the wrist on April 29 against the Toronto Blue Jays. He took the next three games off before returning for two games. He was then placed on the DL on May 9 and returned to action on May 23. Sheff played 6 games, going 6-for-25 as a DH and right fielder. On May 31, he returned to the DL with a torn ligament in his wrist.
The Yankees have also announced that Hideki Matsui will be out until September as well. It will be interesting to see if Bernie Williams and Melky Cabrera can keep up their good play and keep the Yankees alive in the AL East until then. If they struggle, expect to see George Steinbrenner pull the trigger on a deal for someone like Bobby Abreu or Alfonso Soriano.
