Yankees Making Their Move
On May 29th the Yankees were 14 1/2 games behind the Red Sox with a 21-29 record. Now on August 13th they are 66-51 and 4 games behind the Red Sox. They have been 45-22 in that time span. Roger Clemens 4-5 ironically is the only Yankee starter in their present configuration with a losing record. However since the date of his first start when the team was 29-31 they have been 37-20 since his contribution in the clubhouse may have a lot to do with their success so far in the second half. Yankees handle adversity well so it is no surprise they are this close to the Red Sox after such a horrific start. All of the starters besides Clemens now have winning records including rookie starter Phillip Hughes.
It is crucial they do well against the Orioles in the three game series that ends on Wednesday. They have four games at home against the Tigers, three games on road against the Angels, four road games at Detroit then return for a three game series with Red Sox. Red Sox during the same time span have six games against the Rays, three games against the Angels and four games against White Sox then the three game series with the Yankees. So the schedule favors the Red Sox and the Red Sox would like to be further ahead of Yankees by the time they meet again so a sweep by Yankees wouldn't leave the Yankees in first place.
