Yankees Insult Their Manager, and Their Fans

I am not a Yankee fan at all; anyone who has read me knows this. However, the news today from Yankeeland is insulting to anyone who is a sports fan. The Yankees let Joe Torre go as manager today. The classy Joe Torre. The high road Joe Torre. The playoffs every year Joe Torre. But could the Yankees let him go in a classy manner? Of course not! They insult Joe, and every Yankee fan out there.

George Steinbrenner and company have the right to do what they want. It is their team, they are the owners. However, the Yankee fans have had the right to not be lied to. The Yankees came up with their "best offer" today, which was a 2.5 MILLION DOLLAR PAY CUT! They offer the man $5 million dollars for one year, and a $1 million incentive per round of playoffs. Are they kidding!? Is this some rookie manager that you have to hold a candle in front of? This is JOE TORRE! Playoffs every year since he took over!

Then, not only do they offer a paycut, but they lie to the Yankee fans. They say, "We made our best offer!" BEST OFFER!! FOR A GUY THAT MADE THE PLAYOFFS EVERY YEAR FOR OVER A DECADE! With all of the money that has been wasted on projects like Carl Pavano, and Jared Wright, the least they could have done was offer the guy the SAME SALARY HE HAD BEEN MAKING! There is absolutely no way this was the Yankees best offer, and you fans should be insulted that your team is selling that story.

The Yankees have a right to fire Joe Torre. But the public has the right to be treated honestly, and that didn't happen today.

I'm surprised that there is NO heat on Cashman. This guy has been given the biggest budget in all of baseball, but he still can't put together a good pitching staff.

Torre deserved better than that from Yankees for 12 playoff appearances. Torre is a class act and has to much class to stay in such a classless organization. When Steinbrenner issued his win or else ultimatum in middle of division series he made it almost impossible for Yankees to win. No manager should have to manage under that kind of pressure. Just wonder how much Girardi will take if he becomes manager. Mattingly may be a better yes man than Girardi. Last time Girardi had a run in with an owner he lost his job with the Marlins.

I gotta agree with you there, Niteowl. Torre definitely deserved a lot more respect, and I respect him as a manager, and all he has done. Yes, as a Red Sox fan, I respect what he does as a manager who loves the game of baseball and his players. It's his choice, and if I was him, I would've done the same thing.

Girardi would probably be a better motivator than Mattingly but can't see him taking any guff from Steinbrenner or whoever is in charge at the top.

Am surprised that Cashman is still around...No wonder the Yankees played so poorly at first of season with all those junkyard pitchers they brought up from Triple A. Not saying much for the farm system...know they had a raft of injuries to contend with but with Igawa in rotation at first of season knew they were in for a bad time.

I am sure it was more than the money thing for Torre...he was being asked to prove himself all over after he has shown he is a good manager already.

It was definitely more than the money thing for Torre. He's a manager who loves the game of baseball; he's not an A-Rod wannabe. It's all about respect, and the game of baseball to Torre than anything else, from what I can see in Joe Torre. Steinbrenner felt like he didn't need him. Now, he finally sees the light. Unfortunately, Steinbrenner's light bulb takes some time to turn on.

At his age Torre doesn't need the money plus he is probably getting a lot of pension money. Yes Steinbrenner's light bulb has been too dim for a long time...will be interesting to see if Steinbrenner goes into Hall of Fame someday or did he make too many enemies along the way?

If he has too many enemies, can't he just pay them to vote for him? Everyone's got a price.

He has probably thought of making a payoff to get in. But then what has he really done except cause salaries to escalate and use the philosophy of paying top dollar for stars even if they turn out to do nothing like Carl Pavano, Kevin Brown and Kei Igawa.
