Yankees Fans: The end is near

by user Manny Stiles

I know, we don't get enough Yankees articles here, but this one is different...

The media is in the news again. Media members were reprimanded by the Yankee organization for not staying behind designated areas to keep press away from 'the Boss'. The press is being kept away from George Steinbrenner more than ever. He's getting old and somewhat easily confused. His handlers are protecting him more than ever.

Keith Olbermann told a story today on the "Dan Patrick Show" on ESPN Radio how "The Boss" (Steinbrenner, not Springsteen) rambled on and on about Olbermann to former President Clinton upon their meeting together, but for the life of him could not remember Keith's name!

Seriously, I've always liked George... baseball fans need guys like him to hate. I'm not picking him in my death pool or anything (I have O.J. Simpson). But the day is coming soon, and I'm not sure Yankees fans even acknowledge this...

I want to know, as a baseball fan and somewhat of a Yankee-yanker, how are the people 'feeling' this situation?

Are Yankee fans nervous about the future? Or is everyone just ignoring the inevitable? George IS the Yankees (even if he is from Cleveland and lives in Tampa)

Are Yankees haters going to hate the Yanks the same without King George?

Do you trust the son-in-law who supposedly will take over?

What will become of the "Evil Empire" if Darth vader goes by the wayside?

Are dark days ahead for the Yankees if Steinbrenner (the face of evil) isn't there?

George Steinbrenner has been good for the Yankess and very bad for baseball. Thats a better track record than Peter Angelos who has been bad for the Orioles and bad for baseball.

Why exactly has he been so bad for baseball? Because the teams are more likely to sell out games (if they don't regulary) when they are in town? Because they contribute the most to other teams via the revenue sharing agreements?

Angelos makes it hard for other owners to pony up the tremendous ducats it takes for over-the-hill, out of shape former stars that no one else wants to sign with your organization. At least Tom Hicks smartened up a bit?

No, he is bad for baseball because along with owenrs like Angelos, he has created the situation in baseball where the rich teams can compete, and the poor can't. As I pointed out last week, its not just free agents and draft picks. The Yankees, Mets, Orioles, etc., have the ability to sign 16 year old Venezualans to 2 million dollar contracts. The Twins, Tigers and Brewers do not.

I disagree, the yankees are always good for baseball. The team always needs to be good because they're the bad guys...if the bad guys suck, whats the point...

Well, I remember a long time ago when the Marlins were pretty competitive, winning the world series, with a small payroll. And it seems that your Mets have employed the system to their advantage this yr, do you think there might be a correlation to their winning with their recent increase in spending?

I hope George has enough to sense to make an offer for Bobby Abreu. Send the Phils all the top Yankees prospects as they want (especially in the area of SP, 3B, and C). Please, George, Abreu will lead you to the promise land. He is, after all, from the coutry that has produced Hugo Chavez! :)

I don't know, he wasn't v. good for yanks in the 80's and early 90's was he? It doesn't take an idiot to take the best sports brand in the world and implement his spend, spend, spend strategy. I will say he's been a marketing genius, though. The real test would be if ownership can reduce some spending while remaining highly completive before the luxury taxes are out of ctrl. I think it would take new ownership blood to do that.

I'll hate the Yanks the same. Steinbrenner is annoying, arrogant, and merciless, but largely irrelevant in my hatred of the Yankees. I'd also hate the Yanks the same if they were in last place year after year - I'd just laugh at them more.

After George is gone I still want to hear these words spoken at a press conference: "Ladies and gentlemen, the new owner of the New York Yankees...Mark Cuban!"

How 'bout Bill Gates? Maybe he'll finally get sick of Paul Allen gloating about his sports teams and he'll go out and buy the greatest franchise ever.

Yeah, he already buys everyone else's products and ideas. then slaps MSFT on it and calls it his! He's PERFECT as Yankees owner!!! (Other than they'd be the Microsoft Yankees, moved to Washington, changed the Uniforms and they'd always crash...)

Anon, anon, anon... While killing Selig could be construed as good... does one good deed (and the george Costanza years) really make up for all those years not getting Donnie Baseball to a World Series while getting Jose Can'tseco a ring just so the Red Sox couldn't get him???
