Yankees Decision Coming Soon...

by Kenrick Thomas

[1]  The New York Yankees interviewed Tony Pena for the manager job. Pena has confidences, and he wants to take this team to the World Series.

"With the talent that we have, I think we can do it with this team next year," Pena said. "There's no question in my mind that we have the capability and we have the talent to go and do the job."

The thought is crazy, but Pena is motivated. After underachieving three straight seasons, the Yankees need a manager that wants success.

Pena has two seasons of experience with the Yankees, and that's helpful. His interview was filled with confidences, and that's needed.

The Yankees have six candidates, but the interviews are over."We're very impressed with all three candidates," Hank Steinbrenner said. "I told you it would be a tough decision. Tony, I would describe him as a motivator. A high-energy motivator. That's the way he came across."

Motivation is important, because there wasn't any last season. Pena can bring motivation to the Yankees, and that will help them succeed.

Pena isn't the favorite, but he's not a bad choice. He helps the Yankees, and his present is needed.

The Yankees are still searching, but this shouldn't be hard.

"I don't see any reason not to go with their decision," Steinbrenner said. "It's been an in-depth process. You've got to respect the opinion of your experts."

Its important for everyone to agree, because this decision effects the Yankees. If someone isn't happy, controversy will explode and the Yankees won't succeed.

"The only thing I'm going to comment about the Yankees situation is what I said a few days ago," Joe Girardi said. "I had a great interview. And it's an honor for whoever gets that job."

It's an honor and pressure as well. Failure won't be accepted, because the Yankees have talent it important to understand that.

"The main message that I wanted to tell them is that I'm capable to manage this ballclub and I'm capable to take this ballclub to the final line, which is winning the World Series," Pena said.

Great mind, because that needs to happen. Be careful, because everyone expects a World Series from the Yankees every season.

"One thing about Joe, he never was up and he never was down," Pena said.

That hurt the Yankees, because it didn't work towards the end. Joe Torre's personality couldn't last with the Yankees. Pena learned from Torre, and that's helpful. The players will be formula with Pena, and lots of changes won't be made.

"I learned to establish myself; I learned to be myself a little bit more. I learned to give more people responsibility and things like that." said Pena.

"I think the most important thing is whoever we hire, give 'em a chance because he's not getting the '96 Yankees. He's getting an even younger team or for the most part a team in transition. Give him a little while," he said. "We want to win the World Series every year. We're not stupid enough to think we can do it. Of course, we'd love to win the World Series next year."

That's understandable, because the Yankees can't win every season.

Tony Pena or Joe Girardi would probably be better motivators than Don Mattingly but since Mattingly hasn't managed before it is hard to tell what kind of manager he would be. Girardi to me is the best choice but wouldn't be surprised if Mattingly or Pena was hired as manager.

I will never say anything bad about Joe Torre. It wasn't his fault the starting pitchers were falling like flies early in the season. All he could do was call up pitchers from minors who had no business being in majors till they could get pitchers healthy except for Pavano who pitched only for a short time. Joe Torre was a class act and to get in playoffs in all 12 seasons with Yankees was something the next manager probably won't be able to do if they can last 12 seasons.
