Yankees 25-15 Since May 29th...Griffey Jr. Hits 587th in Unusual Game

Baseball Notebook

Yankees 25-15 Since May 29th

On May 29th the Yankees were 21-29 and 14 1/2 games behind the Red Sox but after last night's game they are 46-44 after having a 25-15 record since the 29th of May. Only problem is that they have only pared 5 and a half games off the lead of the Red Sox. If the Red Sox win only half their games the rest of the way they will have 91 wins and with them playing at a .609 clip that isn't too likely to happen. Another thing is that if both teams win or lose on the same day it means the Yankees can gain no ground on that day. Having said all of that though the Yankees have come from 13 games back in August before to win the AL East before so it is still too early to say they are out of it but they will have to sweep the Red Sox in head to head competition to really make up much ground.

Ken Griffey Jr. Hits 587th Home Run

Ken Griffey Jr. passed Frank Robinson on the all time home run list by hitting his 587th home run in a strange game in their win over the Braves. There were 27 hits in the game but only Griffey with a home run and Edgar Renteria with two doubles had extra base hits in the game with 24 singles hit by the two clubs. It is unusual for a starting pitcher these days to get four at bats yet Bobby Livingston not only had four at bats but was four for four in those at bats. The most amazing thing though is that he only pitched five innings and still batted four times. It is a rare event for a pitcher to get four hits and can't recall it happening this year but I would like to know if anyone reading this knows of a pitcher getting four hits this season.

Congrats on Ken Jr. passing Frank Robinson. 13 away from hitting 600, and only the fourth person to do it without steroids. That's amazing.

I agree with Romiezzo that Griffey Jr. is one one the few players high on the home run chart that almost certainly has not used steroids. I am pulling for him to hit his 600th home run this season and I will be a lot more excited about that than I would if Bonds hits his 756th.

Congrats to Griffey, but it breaks my heart, because we should probably be talking about him chasing after Hank Aaron. It's amazing he's come back from so many injuries and performed at such a high level. I never realized how old he was; he's only a year younger than Sammy Sosa.

I remember when a Ken Griffey Jr. Upper Deck rookie card was worth $150..no telling what it is worth now but it hurt me too to see Griffey injured so often. He needs one hit for 2500 hits. He had three straight years with less than 100 hits due to injuries. He will have to play till he is 41 to reach 3000 hits barring any serious injuries.
