Yankees' Injuries Increase

12
Vote

The New York Yankees injury situation continued to expand today, with the club announcing that catcher Jorge Posada has a torn hamstring tendon.

Posada missed the Wednesday night 8-6 victory over Boston after being injured Tuesday against Boston. He has not yet been moved to the DL, but it seems only a matter of time. The Yankees will be calling up an as yet unnamed catcher from the minors to replace him.

The Yankees may also be facing the prospect of another pitcher, Jaret Wright, landing on the DL. He, too, was injured in Tuesday's game against Boston, but he has not yet received a full medical evaluation.

If only they had enough money to build a team with depth and a good bench! It's a shame that the economics of baseball these days hinders a small market team like that.

Yes, it's really terrible that the Yankees can't afford to have a good bench, like they used to back in the 90's, when they were - you know - winning World Series. Perhaps that's related?

Yes.....they really should start a charitable plate, get it passed around New York, like at church.

So if they aren't deep then what do you attribute them being 1 game out of first and taking 2/3 from sox to?

ps. I'd love to see how the sox would respond to similar injuries/losses to varitek, manny, etc. Mirabelli, Mohr everyday?!?! Yeah, that's so much deeper than yanks.

Now you guys are arguing about who's bench is deeper? Is it gonna take a Blue Jay AL East title to end this Sox-Yanks pissing match?

no sir. was just using sox to make a pt. tell me if there's any bench deep enough to overcome starting catcher (except for nats until last night), 2/3 OF, etc...

First of all, none of these major injuries have been affecting the Yankees long enough to truly have an impact on Win-Loss records, so hold your horses there, big guy. Give it time. Second, before you brought it up, nobody was comparing the Yankees and Red Sox bench. So your observations are not only less than brilliant, they were largely irrelevant to this discussion.

But, since you brought it up, let's compare the benches (New York first, then Boston)

Catcher: Kelly Stinnet vs. Doug Mirabelli 1B: Andy Phillips vs. J.T. Snow 2nd Infielder: Miguel Cairo vs. Alex Cora 1st Outfielder: Bernie Williams vs. Willy Mo Peña

2nd Outfielder: Terrence Long vs. Willie Harris

So we have Stinnet, Phillips, Cairo, Williams, and Long. About the only guy from the New York bench that seems to be a definite improvement is Bernie Williams over Peña, though Peña's been having a great season filling in for Crisp. Long and Harris is probably a wash, Snow's probably better than Phillips, Cora and Cairo are probably close, with a slight edge to Cora, maybe, and certainly Mirabelli is worlds better than Kelly Stinnet.
