Wrap it up, the Cubs are your NL Central Champs

The Chicago Cubs, after being swept by the Florida Marlins this week, came to the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati with a magic number of two to clinch the National League Central.

It took no longer than Friday night.

Carlos Zambrano threw seven shutout innings, Alfonso Soriano led off a game with a homer for the 11th time this season, Derrek Lee smashed a two run homer, and the Cubs rolled over the Reds by a score of 6-0 to cut their magic number to one.

Then, the San Diego Padres did the rest of the dirty work.

Chris Capuano was solid for three innings for the Milwaukee Brewers, but fell apart in a three run fourth. Corey Hart homered in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score. The Padres rallied then in the sixth for a run against Claudio Vargas on back to back doubles by Adrian Gonzalez and Khalil Greene to make it 4-3 San Diego.

Milwaukee had a chance to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with one out. Manager Ned Yost went to his bench and brought up Craig Counsell to face right handed reliever Cla Meredith. Instead, he bounced into a inning ending. 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.

Greene added a two run shot in the eighth to extend the lead to 6-3, and setting the stage for the major league career saves leader, Trevor Hoffman. Hoffman fanned Mike Rivera, Bill Hall and Rickie Weeks in order to end the game, and the Brewers hopes for the postseason.

The Brew Crew lost for the 22nd consecutive time when Capuano appeared.

That's right Beermakers, your dreams...are over.

The Cubs become the first team in the National League to lock up a playoff berth. Zambrano extended his career high in wins with his 18th in the contest. So for the first time since 2003, the North Side of Chicago will have playoff baseball at Wrigley.

The Cubs are going to have the worst record of any playoff team in the NL, yet they are the first to wrap up a spot in the postseason. Welcome to the National League.

and your point Nejoshi? I would bet that the New York Mets would gladly trade positions with the Cubs right now. Considering on June 23, Milwaukee held an 8.5 game lead, and this club was scuffling, you take it how you can get it.

Yeah, I agree with Silencer. A playoff team is a playoff team. Who cares if they're the first to clinch a division? They still earned it. GO CUBBIES!

I wouldn't mind seeing ANY NL team in the DS/CS. It's going to be great just to see who faces who. Then, everyone except loyal NL fans will just switch gears and go to the AL, because they think (not know, think) the AL is going to automatically win.

Way to go, Cubs! You guys definitely earned it. I would've liked to see either team win it (of course, the Cubs more), but the Cubs ended up on top.

What a season it has been for the NL Central. First, every team sucks except the Brewers, then the Cubs are on fire in June, then they suck in July which enables the Brewers to come back, then the Cards are in the picture, then they suck again, then Alfy comes back from an injury that costed him about half a month, then the Cubs win it all!

Congrats to the Cubs, once again.

lol actually Romie, the Cubs are still the best team in the NL since June 2, when they were 22-31. Since then they have gone 62-44. They did win 17 games in July, scuffled in August a bit and in early September but came back when it mattered, while Milwaukee was like a batch of beer without enough carbon dioxide...FLAT.

Just look at the Cards last year. A team can coast into the playoffs with a poor overall record, and then get hot all of the sudden. And if you get hot in the playoffs, anything can happen. But, personally I think the Rockies and Phillies are the most dangerous teams in the playoffs, if they make it.

The Phillies will be hampered by their weak pitching...even Jut will tell you that. You can't throw Cole Hamels every game in a series.

Sure you can, but his arm would hurt, and he wouldn't win every game for the Phils.

Those are some good predictions Bberg, but both of them rely on their offense, which is not good when it comes to the playoffs. That's the thing with the NL: they either have pitching, or hitting; not a combination of both (the Mets have it, but they never come up with any runs). Therefore, I'm going with the Cubs for my prediction as to who's going to be in the World Series. They have one of the best pitching rotations, as well as Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, and Alfonso Soriano. What more could you need in a playoff team?

i for one was fooled into thinking the brewers were this years detroit tigers and i think if the cubs missed the playoffs after having a yankee-ish offseason it would be a HUGE letdown

I love how everything is "Yankee-ish" when they just sign one player for a lot of money. Who did the Cubs get besides Alfy Soriano and Lou Piniella? The Sawx got JD Drew (overpriced).

I think the Cubbies pitching staff for the postseason lines up as the strongest in the NL. We all know about Philly's woes, the Mets can't do anything right, and Arizona is defying logic with everything they are doing at this point. San Diego is the only team that's comparable, but after Peavy their pitching staff has really started to struggle. Chris Young was a Cy Young candidate in the first half, but has fallen off the face of the earth lately. Greg Maddux, while polished and experienced, is not what he used to be. Z, Lily, and Marquis/Hill form a good set of starters for October. Oh, and that bullpen is on fire.

I love you guys a lot right now. Words can not describe the way I feel right now. All I can think about is my Grandfather and how I miss him. I know he would love this right now.

The Cubs likely will open against either the Mets or Phils, which means in about 8 days their season will be over. But congratulations anyway, coming back from where they were is a great accomplishment.

The D Backs haven't won the West yet, they have a one game lead on San Diego with 2 to play. The Rockies are eliminated from NL West contention but that is it.

and the Cubs, despite playing such stars as Matt Murton, Ronny Cedeno, Sam Fuld, Henry Blanco, Mike Fontenot, Felix Pie and Geovany Soto, blank the Reds today 4-0 at the Great American Ball Park. Rich Hill, Sean Marshall and Scott Eyre combine on a one hitter, that being a bloop double by Buck Coats with two out in the bottom of the sixth.
