Many of you will know that I am a fan of a sport called Snooker. It has also dawned on me that many of you will have never ever seen a snooker match before. It's not the most popular sport in the United States, but I thought it would be a good idea to show you how the match swings about all the time.
Many of you will know 9-ball pool, the principally played American cuesport. Unlike 9-ball pool, snooker offers more skill. The table is twice as long and twice as wide. The pockets are twice as narrow. Everybody uses the same balls, so there's more skill involved in safety shots. Periods of safety play can be engaging, as long as you understand what's going on.
You need to understand the basic rules of snooker. It's quite obvious after a few frames, but the basic rules are - hit and pot a red first. Then move onto one of the other colours. The yellow is worth 2, green is worth 3, brown 4, blue 5, pink 6 and black 7. Colours apart from the reds are replaced on their spots, and after all the reds are potted, the colours are then potted in ascending value sequence, and the balls at that point are not respotted. Fouls are worth 4 points. Watching a frame will make the rules clear however, it's easier to watch than verse.
The obligatory BBC introductory music and sequences...
As a result of viewing this match, you will increase your understanding both of the sport of snooker, and understand what I go on about in articles about it, which can only be a good thing!
My question at this stage is, would you like to see it?
I'll try to post one frame every other day (or there abouts), so it will build the tension as the climax nears. I'll post the opening frame later in the week. I'll first post a preview of the match, to put the game in a context.
Any questions about snooker, or the like, and I'll happily answer them. Similarly, comment your reply if you'd like to see it. Depending on responses, I'll post the match.
