Yesterday, I asked if you wanted to see a game, and "Why not?" was the consensus. So here is a preview of the match I'm showing.
The match I have chosen to show you is the 1992 World Snooker Final between Stephen Hendry and Jimmy White. Hendry was the 1990 World Champion (where he beat White in the Final), and the Number 1 in the world. White was a three-time runner-up, twice in a row, and had become the most popular player on the tour. As a result, the majority of fans were supporting White.
The match is best of 35 frames, played over 2 days over 4 sessions. First to get to 18 frames. Because the game takes ages and ages, I'll post videos a frame at a time. If you look on here or on Wikipedia, you'll easily find out who wins, but I think it's better if you leave it until we get to the end. So no plot spoiling comments please!
In the run up to the Final, White had been the better player. He had made only the second 147 maximum break in the history of the World Championship, even Hendry had not made one here at this point in his career.
Here's Jimmy's 147... Jimmy himself commentates with David Vine on his break. The noises of balls hitting that you hear that don't correspond to what you see are coming from the other table.
Commentators you'll hear from include "Whispering" Ted Lowe, who used to whisper because he sat in the audience, so couldn't speak too loudly. John Spencer is a three-time World Champion. Eddie Charlton is a famous Australian player that lost in three finals. Clive Everton is involved in the media.
The important thing to grasp from this is that Jimmy White is the fan favourite, and Stephen Hendry is the bookies' favourite, but there isn't as much support for him.
The two's road to the final:
Stephen Hendry
-
Stephen Murphy 10-3
-
James Wattana 13-10
-
Dene O'Kane 13-6
-
Terry Griffiths 16-4
Jimmy White
-
Tony Drago 10-4
-
Alain Robidoux 13-11
-
Jim Wych 13-9
-
Alan McManus 16-7
Both coasted in their Semi Final and were on top form. The consensus was that White was on the better form, however.
Over the next few months, you will see the 35 frame encounter in full. I hope you take the opportunity to watch the match!
