A reduced Day on Day 6 saw the start of Round Two. The match lengths would be increased to 25 frames from 19.
Matches
Allister Carter wasted little time winning 10-4 against Andy Hicks. In the other first round game to conclude on Thursday, John Higgins beat Michael Holt, converting his 6-3 lead into a 10-4 win.
The opening game of the Second Round saw Shaun Murphy play 42 year old veteran John Parrott. The popular BBC pundit and 1991 Champion, Parrott got off to a bad start against the 2005 World Champion, as he trailed 4-0 at the mid-session interval. After it though, Parrott responded by winning three frames in a row to reduce his deficit to 4-3. Murphy took advantage of a dodgy plant attempt from Parrott in the last of the session, to give himself a 5-3 lead. The match concludes on Friday. The other Last 16 game yesterday was between Anthony Hamilton and Ian McCulloch. The game failed to set the pulse racing, as several of the frames were very tactical. The scores were also fairly even all evening, and the opening session ended with the scores level at 4-4.
Moment of the Day
In the sixth frame, Anthony Hamilton was almost snookered, but the shot required a thin contact. He hit the ball on full in the face and dislodged the black from its place too. The referee then had trouble placing the balls back in the exact places, this time it made a huge difference to the shot of Hamilton. But fortunately, after that happened twice, Hamilton did hit the brown, and all was forgotten. What to look forward to
It will be interesting to see if Parrott can continue his comeback against Shaun Murphy. Matthew Stevens needs to win to have a chance of being ranked in the top 16 against Mark Allen - that game starts on Friday. The Hamilton-McCulloch game continues. Also, Stephen Maguire starts against Joe Swail.
