The final day of wholly first round matches got under way on Day 5 at The Crucible Theatre.
Matches
Neil Robertson and Ryan Day played their match. Robertson went into an early 3-0 lead, and the final 6 frames were shared as Robertson took a 6-3 lead into the evening session. Robertson continued to impress in the evening session, and completed a 10-5 win against a difficult opponent. Ronnie O'Sullivan awaits in the next round.Stephen Hendry continued from 5-4 down to Dave Gilbert. The 7 time World Champion still was on poor form, but managed to level at 7-7. At that point, he played his best snooker as Gilbert floundered under pressure. Hendry won the last three frames to go through 10-7.
Stephen Lee continued against Mark Selby. Selby won the first four frames of the session to make it eight frames in a row to lead 8-5. It should have been 9-5, but Lee won the frame to go 8-6. The next two frames were shared. It was 9-7 when Selby finally clinched the match to win 10-7, and advance to play Peter Ebdon in Round Two.
John Higgins began his match against Michael Holt. Holt started the better player and lead 2-0, but Higgins fought back losing only one of the other frames for a 6-3 overnight lead.In the other match played on Wednesday, Allister Carter and Andy Hicks began their match. The first four frames were shared, but Carter then won five in a row to set up a dominant 7-2 lead going into the final session.
What to look forward to
The Second Round starts on Thursday, and the remaining First Round matches come to a close. Shaun Murphy will play John Parrott in the opening Last 16 game.
