The dream rides on here at AGM with the 4 th installment of Roblefko’s well received word of the day. We’ve been told what a “traitor” Scott Gomez is and why free agency is removing value from this word in sports. And how “freedom,” or lack thereof has prevented players and teams from moving on. Yesterday, in celebration of our nation’s birthday, Kelsdad, explained to us the meaning of the word “integrity,” not only in the world we see, but in ourselves. Something can truly be learned from each of those.
To be honest, I was going to take a similar approach, especially with the negative rhetoric, not only among the above words (no offense guys, really), but in the national media in general. Today, as our nation enters its 231 st year, we are seeing a president approaching Nixon-like approval levels, our nation’s pastime being ambushed by the 21 st century’s newest phenomenon and some new phone that does something that every phone since one, Alexander Graham Bell has done…call people. That brings me to the word of the day:
Love
‘’Main Entry: love Pronunciation: 'l&v Function: noun 1 a
(1) : strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties <maternal love for a child>
(2) : attraction based on sexual desire : affection and tenderness felt by lovers
(3) : affection based on admiration, benevolence, or common interests < love for his old schoolmates> b : an assurance of love <give her my love > 2 : warm attachment, enthusiasm, or devotion < love of the sea> 3 a : the object of attachment, devotion, or admiration <baseball was his first love > b (1) : a beloved person : DARLING -- often used as a term of endearment (2) British -- used as an informal term of address 4 a : unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another: as (1) : the fatherly concern of God for humankind (2) : brotherly concern for others b : a person's adoration of God’’
Because some times, damn it, we’ve got to take a look at the world, step back, be happy, and be in love.
Right now, the Philadelphia Phillies are 4 back in a pennant race that, at this point, they have no business even being in. And I love that.
Venus Williams is quietly, silently, achingly fighting through Wimbledon in perhaps the gutsiest performance by a woman ever seen by the current generation. And I love that too!
Bill Simmons recently posted (ESPN actually reposted) an article mocking quite a few NBA GMs, regardless of the fact that…he’s not one…for a reason…and, you know what. I Love that…because not only is he having fun writing it, but I enjoyed reading it
NFL training camp is less than a month away. I can smell football, almost taste it. I know its coming…and I love it!
A-Rod may be sitting out the All-Star Game, but we’re all guaranteed that at least a few dirty, noble and modest players will play the mid-summer classic, not because they have to but because they LOVE to.
Yesterday, Joey Chestnut, demonstrating all that is great about America defeating 6 time defending champion Takeru Kobayashi 66 hotdogs to 63. And for all its gluttony, it was a great moment for a “sport” on the rise, because, damn it, its something we care about! And I loved it!
Most of us are cracks, hacks, wannabes, hobbyists, bloggers, struggling writers or college students (or me, all of the above…) who just want to talk about sports. AGM ‘’’is’’’ the place to do it…and I love it!
So yesterday, as 99% (basically not Alex) of us, sat back, had a few beers (or beverages of your choice), hotdogs, burgers, baked beans, etc, listened to some glorious music de Americana and watched a relatively breathtaking fire works display I had an epiphany…
Damn it, for all its faults, all its trouble, all its cynicism, all its doubt, all its danger, all its questioning, all its difficulty, all its struggles, all its heroes, all its villains, all its money and all its pride (for better or for worse)
I love where I am, I love my country and I love being alive.
