Woody English (Elwood George English) was born on March 2, 1906 in Fredonia, Ohio. He made his Major League debut on April 26, 1927 for the Chicago Cubs. In 1927, his rookie year, he hit .290 with 1 home run and 28 RBI. English played for the Chicago Cubs and Brooklyn Dodgers over the course of his 12 year career.

Most people believe that Woody English's best season was 1930, when he hit for a .335 average and knocked in 59 runs.
