Woody Austin Takes One for the Team

Amid all the sports highlights from last week, you probably saw Woody Austin fall into the water during the President's Cup.
Woody has taken some justified ribbing for comments earlier this year about how he thought he was as good a golfer as Tiger Woods. Still, Austin has been playing the best golf of his career, and that was clearly in evidence in the holes after his plunge. Austin reeled off birdies on each of the remaining holes and turned a loss for the U.S. into a halved match. The momentum from that match--and Woody's plunge--carried over to the next day where the U.S. swept the international team. The U.S. then coasted to an easy victory on the final day.
The President's Cup is a team effort, but Woody Austin was the hero. His willingness to hit a shot out of the water, to fall in the water, and then to climb out and play brilliant golf helped the U.S. to a win. I admire him much more now than I ever have.
