Wood Reports Shoulder Soreness, Again

9
Vote

Chicago Cubs SP Kerry Wood flew to Cincinnati on Wednesday for an examination with Dr. Tim Kremchek. Kremchek performed the arthroscopic surgery on Wood's shoulder. Trainer Mark O'Neal does not expect the examination to reveal new problems. "[Wood] has never used the word 'pain,'" O'Neal said. "[The problem is] going out there and trying to get loose and let him get going in the next inning. It's nothing most people coming back from surgery don't go through. [The shoulder] is a very temperamental joint." Wood will likely miss his next start.

Is anyone suprised? I think bigger news would be "Wood feels great, is ready to claim the Kerry Wood Trophy this year" (Comeback player of the year).

Woods is to the Cubs what Hamels will be to the Phillies.

Wood is done. Any team that signs him to more then the league minimum next season is foolish.

Chris, I think Hamels might be ok, but you are right, the guy seems injury prone right now. He said that the should thing was only for a moment, but they insisted on being cautious. It remains to be seen

Lets review Hamels past: broke bone in arm while pitching in high school, elbow, bad back (which has caused him to do special exercises - for the remainder of his career), elbow, broken hand (from bar fight), back again, shoulder. All of this has occurred within the first 22 years of Hamels' life.

It amazes me how some great athletes are like porcelein dolls and others, an obvious exception -- Cal Ripken, are iron men. I always wondered if sports injuries were a result of the player giving it their all and pushing their bodies to the extreme or some weird correlation b/w athletic ability and frailty.

When is enough ~ enough? Shoulders, backs, knees are all delicate and once injured they can be injured easily once again and again as we see in the case of Woods.

The demands that throwing places on the vulnerable immature elbow frequently produce multiple injuries. baseball is one of the most popular sports for children, but repeated throwing, especially pitching, in skeletally immature athletes can produce elbow injuries that threaten the growth plate. Now compared to 30 years ago...parents are pushing their kids to throw harder and work harder at youner ages. It used to be playing ball in a sand lot and now its physical conditioning and pitching camps at ages pre-little league.

Overtraining occurs when athletes try too hard to improve performance and train beyond the body's ability to recover. Paretns and coaches of children need to learn the warning signs and what to do about it. Training players young isnt going to stop but what is needed is proper training so future injuries can be avoided.

I think it's about time that the guy calls it quits, takes his money, and opens up a restaurant or something.

Even tho Im not a Cubs fan I do apprecuate Woods...for tickets. My friend works at a dealership in Chicago as a service manager, Woods is a client and he gets some good seats. The games are fun for the beer and I guess the hot dogs are pretty good too.

Seems like every other athlete in te city opens up a restaurant after they are finished...Maybe he'll need a chef. I'll take all that HARD earned money.
