Hamilton quarterback Jason Maas threw for three touchdowns and Jesse Lumsden scored on runs of 69 and 75 yards as the Tiger-Cats defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 43-22 for their first win of the CFL season Friday night.

Lumsden's final scoring run sealed the win with 5:19 left and led to chants of Jesse Jesse from the 24,201 at Ivor Wynne Stadium as he celebrated his 25th birthday. He finished the night with 211 yards rushing.

Hamilton (1-5) scored more touchdowns in one game (6) than it had all season combined. Heading into the contest, the Ticats were last in the league with three touchdowns in five games.

Brock Ralph, Jo Jo Walker, Nate Curry and JoJuan Armour scored the other Hamilton touchdowns, while Milt Stegall and Derick Armstrong scored for Winnipeg (3-2-1).

Ticats kicker Nick Setta missed on his lone field goal attempt of 32 yards. Winnipeg's Troy Westwood was 2-for-5, missing from 22, 47 and 42 yards before making shots from 40 and 23 yards in the fourth.

Hamilton defensive back Dwight Anderson was ejected in the fourth quarter after stopping receiver Jamie Stoddard on a reception and then flipping him to the ground in a wrestling move.

Westwood's 40-yarder with 5:45 left pulled the Blue Bombers to 29-16, but Lumsden took the ball on the next play and ran it 75 yards into the end zone. Then, with 3:27 left, defensive back Armour picked up an Armstrong fumble and ran it 62 yards into the end zone in applying the icing to the cake.

Winnipeg scored on its first possession of the game, and it looked as if the Blue Bombers would continue their groove from last week's 36-18 win over the Ticats. Quarterback Kevin Glenn moved the ball 63 yards on six plays, ending in a 33-yard touchdown strike to Stegall for his 140th TD catch.

Lumsden, the league's Canadian player of the month for July, pulled his team even with his 69-yard scoring run around the left end and downfield on the Ticats' first play from scrimmage.

Things calmed down until the second quarter when Hamilton moved the ball downfield and Maas found Ralph for a five-yard touchdown and a 14-8 lead.

Hamilton had big plays nullified by penalties - 13 in the first half alone, including a would-be interception. Both teams scored singles on missed field goals, and when Westwood's missed 47-yarder was run out of the endzone to end the half, the Ticats went into the dressing room up 15-8.

The teams traded touchdowns to begin the third. Maas led an 83-yard drive that ended with a five-yard TD strike to Walker. On the following possession, Glenn ended a 75-yard drive with a 13-yard TD pass to Armstrong, making it 22-15.

Hamilton answered with a 79-yard scoring drive and a 13-yard pass from Maas to Curry, who was able to snag the ball and keep his foot in bounds to survive a Winnipeg challenge.
