Kicker Mark Myers booted two field goals in the final two minutes as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 24-20 in CFL pre-season action at Ivor Wynne Stadium on Friday night.
Receiver Talman Gardner scored Hamilton's lone touchdown on a three-yard pass from starting QB Jason Maas, who shared reps in the game with back-ups Rocky Butler and Timmy Chang. Winnipeg running back Charles Roberts scored the Bombers' lone major on a two-yard run.
Winnipeg kicker Troy Westwood hit two of three field goal attempts, making them from 33 and 26 yards out and missing from 31.
Hamilton split kicking duties between Nick Setta and Myers. Setta made his lone field goal attempt from 35 yards. Myers was three for five, hitting from 44, 16 and 34 yards, missing from 37 and blocked on a 53-yard attempt.
Myers had just hit a 16-yarder to put the Ticats up 21-20 with just over two minutes left on the clock when Hamilton defensive back Kevin Timothee intercepted Winnipeg's back-up QB Justin Holland and returned the ball to the Bombers' 35-yard line. That set up Myers' 34-yarder to make it 24-20 with 1:17 left.
The rest of the scoring came on conceded safeties (five in all) in the chilly, swirling winds of Ivor Wynne Stadium in front of a crowd of 20,153.
Winnipeg starting QB Kevin Glenn played all of the first half and came out midway through the third to give Holland some reps. The Bombers open their regular season against Edmonton on June 28.
Maas, who underwent surgery in the off-season, has been slated as the starting quarterback when Hamilton begins its 2007 in Toronto on June 30.
Maas suffered through the 2006 season with a bicep injury to his throwing arm while both his own numbers and his team's success suffered along with it. The QB completed 298 passes of 484 attempts for 3,204 yards and 17 interceptions to only eight touchdowns. He sat out the final three games. The Ticats finished the season with four wins.
All teams have until Saturday at midnight to get their active roster down to 46 players.
