Win the World Series or Make the Hall of Fame?

by user LouGehrig

Let us say you were a baseball player who was having a borderline Hall of Fame career. Paul O'Neill is an example. You may think of a better one.

If you could have ONLY one, would you rather be a player who contributed significantly to his team winning the WS OR would you prefer never being part of a World Championship team but being selected for the Hall of Fame?

World Series, Baby! Team sport, team results. Plus, when you win the Series, you get to be better than everybody else if even for only one year. When you get in the Hall, you are as good as a hundred or so other players.

I agree completely. I wonder how many of the players feel.

So would I rather be Rusty Kuntz or Ted Williams? Kuntz has a nice RING to it... Ultimately I'd rather be Yogi Berra and get so sick of winning I'd get belt buckles and money clips instead of rings...

If your saying would I rather be arguably the greatest hitter who ever lived, or a guy who sounds like a female body part, then yes I'd rather be Ted Williams. However, I generally agree with BWW on this one.

I thought the original post stated "...borderline Hall of Fame career." Does Rusty's fit that category?

All I know, Rusty fits inside of a world series ring he can take anywhere... Ted chills in Scottsdale while his plaque hangs in Cooperstown...He won't be forgotten as a hitter, but he won't be remembered as W.S. champ. I think he was a better pilot and fisherman, anyway. nuff said. Thanks for the minuses, you childish pricks. I AGREED with BWW.

who cares about 'borderline' or not. My point was, I'd rather be a scrub with a ring than a King with no bling

My first reaction was World Series, because of the team aspect taht BWW mentioned.

But then I thought of players who are great and have great careers but are on the wrong team at the wrong time. I'm not talking about Arod-type players who don't have a championship because they went to the highest bidder even though they suck, I'm talking about people like Omar Vizquel and Cap Ripken, who is one of the best ever at his position but never won a ring (but he did get to write a book complaining about Jose Mesa keeping it from him).

So essentially the choice is between being on one great team or have a worthwhile career and be appreciated for who I was over a long period of time. It's close, but I think I'd go with the HOF.

It would be great to have a HOF career, but I don't think you could match the joy or excitement of the final out being recorded on your teams World Series victory and getting to have that moment in the spotlight.

If you are a competitive athlete who relishes winning more than anything, the World Series is the pinnacle. If you are in it for yourself and nothing more, you probably won't be good enough to get to the Hall. Short answer -- Gimme those rings.

Carl Yastremski or Paul O'Neill, I'm going Yaz. But if it's a borderline HOF pitcher versus Jack Morris, I'll take Morris.

No, he's not. He's a borderline hall of famer if you compare him to guys in the Hall who shouldn't be. :)

Baseball is a TEAM sport, as a few others have said. Allie Reynolds was not put into the HOF (though he deserves to be, in my opinion!) But he was a major factor in the Yanks' success. True Yankee fans remember his name, even if the guys at Cooperstown don't. I go with the team.

World Series for me. Winning the big one would put a nice bookend to a good (but not great) career. You can say that you did everything, including scoring a ring for yourself, your teammates, and your city. I think I consider the HOF as not really "part" of your career, but rather a post-career honor.

Given the choice, I'd much rather win the World Series. It's the pinnacle for anyone who steps onto the diamond. While O'Neill did not have a "borderline Hall of Fame career," he's still a good name to use as a reference point - a strong postseason player who contributed to 5 World Series champs. I'd also happily take Joe Carter's career, even though he got no love from Hall voters.

I would much rather be an all-time great than a player who hardly contributed but got a ring. Being Ted Williams is better than being Javier Vasqeuz.

Of course it's better, since Vasquez doesn't have a ring, either. Then again, he's not just a frozen head.

I agree. I'd rather know I put in a whole career full of hard work and being the best I could be than just being lucky enough to end up on the right team at the right time like Pablo Ozuna, Pokey Reese or Chad Fox.

This is a no-brainer - The Series! If I were lucky enough to make the Hall, I would embrace it lovingly, but winning the World Series is why everyone plays this game! It's the penultimate!

is it only one championship? or a few as part of a dynasty team? if it is only one then i think i will still take the championship of HOF.
