Wily Mo Pena Traded to Washington Nationals

by ScottVanPeltStyle.com

This just flew over the wire, but reports have Boston Red Sox outfielder Wily Mo Pena being traded to the Washington Nationals for a player to be named later. Cash considerations will be accompanying the him to Chocolate City.

More details will follow as they are made known, but one of the most mocked of the Red Sox players might be a good fit for the Nationals. His tenure in the National League was not that bad as a member of the Cincinnati Reds. Between 2002-05, he hit 51 home runs in 302 games.

But considering that was the roaring days of steroids, it will remain to be seen if that's a realistic expectation in Washington.

This trade makes no sense. Are there deeper chemistry issues involved here, on the Red Sox team?

Why don't you think it makes sense? Wily Mo sucked 95% of the time, he was taking up a roster spot and they couldn't send him to AAA. Kielty or Ellsbury will be their 4th outfielder now. What makes you think there's chemistry issues?

The only thing that sucks is that they couldn't use wily mo in a package to get a better player (like part of a the gagne trade...hypothetically)

Yeah Chris, Meg is right...Wily Mo has been useless and taking up a spot...the only thing that sucks is they truly did get hosed in the Arroyo trade...

Although Bronson is giving Wily Mo a run for his money in the awfulness category...5-13 with a 4.63 ERA. Oi. I'd still take him back.

It also would help Arroyo if he got a bit of run support now and again. The Reds average 3.98 runs per game in his starts, scoring 3 or less runs in 12 of his 25 starts, and four runs in four others.

4.63 in the NL Central is probably a full run higher in the AL East...

Eh Willy Mo will be a decent freak show here in DC if he can showcase some of that power he has.

I haven't seen the dimensions for the pending new ballpark in DC, but if it is anywhere near as cavernous as RFK, then Pena will be pretty much useless there as well, if he was even to last that long.

Red Sox fans will miss Pena's .134 average at Fenway Park, his .291 on base percentage and his .385 slugging percentage. Hitting .133 for August is not anything to write home about either. What is it with the Nationals acquiring players like Ryan Langerhans and Wily Mo Pena? Pena has hammered out one home run since the All Star break.

Good move on the Red Sox part. Wily Mo didn't play every day and most likely complained to management to play. Quite frankly, he didn't deserve time to play because the last time I checked his batting average was still about at the Mendoza line (.200). So, good move.

Maybe someone should comb through the dozens of articles from last year pronouncing Wily Mo's greatness - Red Sox fans are so damned funny...

"Red Sox fans are so damned funny... " quoting from Manny Stiles. It reminds me of a lot of Yankee fans that want Johnny Damon to play LF.

Steinbrenner had to run with that gut feeling that Sheff would love playing for Torre and be a clubhouse leader. Lord knows Guerrero has been a real 'cancer' (yes that is sarcasm to the younger folk here) for the Angels....

Brien Taylor started off well in minors with 337 strikeouts in his first 324 innings over his first two seasons. He was 19-15 in his first two seasons then in his next five seasons he had a 3-15 record. All the Yankees got out of him for all that money was six minor league seasons then the Indians signed him for his seventh and final season. That season was a complete disaster as he pitched two innings gave up five hit and eleven runs and walked nine batters and made seven wild pitches. When you make seven wild pitches it was time for him to hang it up and he did or more likely the Indians did.In a report dated July 6, 2006 Brien Taylor is reportedly laying brick for $909 a month. He was charged with child abuse in 2005 for leaving his children 2-11 alone for eight hours while shooting pool. His $1.55 million signing bonus has likely been spent years ago.
