Born on March 24, 1970 in Maracaibo, Zulia (Venezuela), Wilson Alvarez (Wilson Eduardo (Fuenmayor) Alvarez) played for the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, San Francisco Giants, Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers over the course of his 14 year career. Alvarez broke into the bigs on July 24, 1989 with the Texas Rangers, and put up a 3.51 ERA in 56.1 innings pitched in 1991, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Wilson Alvarez's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1996, when he posted a 4.22 ERA, won 15 games and struck out 181 batters. However, others believe that it was 1997, when he posted a 3.48 ERA, won 13 games and struck out 179 batters.
