Willis to Yankees?

7
Vote

Top New York Yankees pitching scout Jim Benedict was in Tampa to watch Dontrelle Willis pitch against the Devil Rays yesterday fueling specualtion that the Yankees are interested in acquiring the young south-paw. The team did not have a scout at the first two games and the Marlins are expected to trade Willis before the July 31 trade deadline.

Which is more likely?

a) The Yankees are going to trade for Willis, given they have no prospects? b) The Yankees sent a scout to watch a pitcher who they may face next month (June 23-25)?

Survey says: b.

I agree. The yanks don't have any strong prospects to deal for him. I think the Mets should deal Milledge. Can't get enough young, quality left handed pitching. Oh, wait, you can trade them for Victor Zambrano though.

It's a good point you make, but the scout was not at the other two games they played. I realize they have no prospects, but what they do have is an owner willing to pay Willis' contract.

The Yanks get involved in every trade if for no other reason to drive up the price for their rivals. I'm sure they are interested in him, and I'm sure they'll make an offer. But they may not have enough to offer for him. Then again if he keeps struggling his value may wane.

As bad as the Yankees need a bright young pitching star, the Marlins will unlikely part with him to New York because of salary reasons. The Marlins are in one of those "sell off" seasons and since New York is filled with overpaid, over-the-hill stars and not enough promising league-minimum 20-year-olds, I don't see the Marlins biting on this one.

Is Willis even worth the asking price? He's a young pitcher, who had one fantastic years. He has a funky delivery, which is probably more indicative of his success than his actual stuff. My bet, when all is said and done, his career will resemble that of Steve Avery more than John Smoltz.

Still, Avery wasn't that bad.

Willis would at least be amazing for a year in the AL while hitters get used to him.

The Marlins sell off everyone after each season, yet they keep Willis why? Not to trade him, to build a team around him. They are not trading Willis (until they win their next world series, then he's gone). I agree with DNL, they are scouting a pitcher who they are playing next month, because they only play that team every 3 years, and don't know too much about him.

I agree with what you're saying, but I also think they are trying to build around Cabrera more than Willis. Especially with Willis' struggles so far this year. Perhaps they are trying to build around Cabrera and Willis? Nah, they aren't smart enough for that.

The Marlins ownership promised they would not trade Willis. Trading him would certainly anger the fans...oh wait, they don't have any fans.

Yeah, they really aren't smart enough for that. Both of them are good, and both would be a great foundation for a team in 3 or 4 years. I think if Willis leaves, the Marlins leave Miami. That's the end for the few fans they have.

I agree, DNL. I think the Yankees will finally begin to realize that they can't keep trying to retool their team with outside acquisitions. Let them try and rebuild from the inside out for a little while. They've spent too many years trading prospects for some other team's talent, and it's taking it's toll.
