[edit] Biography

Willie Wood (William Vernell Wood) was born on December 23, 1936 in Washington, District Of Columbia. After going to high school at Armstrong (Washington, DC), Wood attended Coalinga JC and the University of Southern California. Wood made his professional debut in the NFL in 1960 with the Green Bay Packers. He played for the Green Bay Packers for his entire 12 year career.

Most people believe that 1962 was Willie Wood's best year, as he picked off 9 passes. In the 1962 NFL Championship Game, against the New York Giants at Yankee Stadium, he was ejected in the second half for striking an official. All indications are that the contact was inadvertent, as he was gesturing animatedly as the official approached.

His interception of a Len Dawson pass is credited with breaking open Super Bowl I. With the Packers leading the Kansas City Chiefs 14-10 early in the second half, they blitzed Dawson on a third-and-5 from the Chiefs' 49. His pass to the left flat was picked off by Wood and returned to the Chiefs' 5. Elijah Pitts scored on the next play; the Packers went on to win 35-10.
