Will the Braves Miss the Playoffs?

Last year I made public my MLB predictions for the first time, in our school newspaper. For some reason, I chose the Philadelphia Phillies or the New York Mets to win the NL East, thinking I could pick the season where the Atlanta Braves finally cede control of the division.

Well, thanks to Jeff Francoeur and Andruw Jones, I was wrong. John Schuerholz and Bobby Cox were again lauded as underrated geniuses (eventually they'll be correctly rated). Francoeur made Sports Illustrated. And I looked a bit like an idiot.

This year, I resolved to pick the Braves at all costs. I didn't care that they had little pitching, or that all of their 2005 rookies could look forward to sophomore slumps, or that Chipper Jones was injured and aging. If they don't win the division, so be it. If they do, OK. It's difficult to admit this, but I was torn between the Phillies and Mets after the Braves.

The Mets raced away to that midsummer Sports Illustrated cover and a double-digit lead. Omar Minaya is already talking about resting players and prepping for the playoffs. The Phillies phlopped (I really was rooting for them from all the way out here in Seattle). The Braves simply had a mediocre start and played progressively worse as they approached the All-Star Break. Uh-oh.

I'm surprised this isn't a bigger story. Even the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, together, haven't dominated their division over the same 13-year time period. It seems like the Braves maintain the same personality regardless of personnel and always play like winners. Give credit to Bobby Cox, who mysteriously cranks out NL East titles.

Now it's time for some eerie theories on whether the Braves can come back, particularly given their current six-game win streak (and Chipper Jones' underrated major league record of 14 straight games with an extra-base hit). Clearly their pitching and offense don't match up to the Mets. But baseball is baseball, and don't forget those 1914 Braves! This would be the 14th straight NL East title...

In seriousness, the Braves are just five games back of the suspect Reds for the wildcard berth.

I'm not an Atlanta fan by any remote stretch of the imagination, but I'm fascinated by their incredible run (and Oakland-like mediocrity in the playoffs).

Bad title - obviously they'll miss the playoffs sometime. The question focuses more on this year - will the Braves miss the playoffs?

I think they could make believers out of people with this series against St. Louis. Not that the Braves have been winning their games against scabby teams or anything, but St. Louis was really hot coming into this series, and they got WHIPPED by the Braves in the opening game. Just look at their offense in the first four games of the second half - they've won by an average of 7 runs, and are averaging almost 13 runs scored per game. In three games at Petco, one of the most pitcher-friendly parks in the MLB, the Braves scored 36 runs. WOW!

As I just wrote in a different article, I think this is the year it ends. As far as the division goes, the Mets are too good offensively and have too big of a cushion at this point. The Wildcard is certainly up for grabs, but it's basically a pick 'em at this point. Despite the Braves hot streak, I don't like their chances. The pitching, especially in the pen, is not there. Cox and Shuerholz are geniuses and superb at what they do, but I think the run has finally come to an end.

Im a long time Braves fan, and midway through June I thought the Division Titles were over and the wildcard was gone. However, the last two weeks are changing my mind. A sweep of the Padres over the weekend and the destruction of the Cards last night. The Braves are 11.5 back of the Mets in the East. 2 good series and they are right back in it. Scary as it may seem, Ole Bobby Cox might be able to work that Mangerial magic one more time. Especially if the mets cannot add some pitching to their staff. Pedro is already getting a lil fragile and that only leaves Glavine to hold up the banner.

Sopt with your nonsense. Even if the Mets become a .500 team and go 35-35 the rest of the way, the Braves would still need to go 46-23 just to tie. You think either of those are realistic?

Okay so winning the division may still be a bit far off, but I can see the Mets going into a tailspin. Im not sold on them keeping up that blazing pace they had in May and early June.

Mets have wrapped up this division, barring Pedro and Glavine both ending up on the DL for August and September. The Braves are still 5 games under .500. That may be too much to make up, even for the Wild Card, yet alone the division.

The Braves will not win the division, but they do have a realistic shot at the Wild Card. Right now they are only five games back, and nobody has really set themselves apart in the NLWC race. Does anyone think the Reds will win it?

No, the Reds absolutely will not win it. They have made two trades to strengthen their bullpen, and their bullpen still wreaks. Their rotation is overachieving, and they are beginning to come down to earth. And this is about the time of year that everyone on that team starts going on the DL. They don't stand a chance.

I think that this is the year that their NL East title reign ends - there is no way at all that they can come back and beat the Mets for the title. After all, it's time for the Braves to let someone else lose in playoffs for once. Maybe the Wild Card can be theirs - but if they win that, won't they end up playing the Cards? And wouldn't that be, well, a slaughter?
