Will the Angels miss Erstad?

by user The Beast

Yes, without a doubt, the Halos will miss Darin Erstad, especially his locker room presense. How much? That remains to be seen.

They won't really miss his on the field play for he only appeared in forty games last season. Injuries began to pile up and he just wasn't the same and productive player that he used to be.

The team will definately need some players to step into the leadership role left by Erstad's departure. As an Angel, Erstad always led by example. He always played hard and preferred to make his point by how he played more than by what he said. However, he was also unafraid to speak his mind when the time was right. The Angels have been constant on the matter, saying that it won't be an issue. His presense will surely be missed, but expect veterans like Orlando Cabrera, Garrett Anderson, and John Lackey to fill the void left by Erstad.

Ugh, get over the Erstad fetish already, Angels fans! Yes, he could play defense. But he couldn't hit (after 2000), and he was costing the team wins with his bat. It's amazing -- J.D. Drew (good hitter when he actually plays) signs a $9 million contract, misses an inordinate number of games due to injury, and is crucified by the press... Erstad (bad hitter when he actually plays) signs a $9 million contract, misses an inordinate number of games due to injury, and is beloved by the press... Does that makes sense to you? So the answer to "Will the Angels miss Erstad?" is "not much".

You forgot to mention Erstad as a punter at Nebraska! You're not allowed to mention his name without saying that. It's in the collective bargaining agreement. As for the JD Drew comparison, you're absolutely right; he IS a prick!

I think the "answer" will be "Darin WHO?"

Which is what I said. They won't miss him too much. They already have vets for leadership and his play wasn't that good either.

Although, a lot of Angel fans (not myself) think that it'll hurt team chemistry.

Seeing as the Angels really have no first baseman at this point, my answer is yes.

I would argue they have too many first base/DH types: Casey Kotchman, Shea Hillenbrand, Robb Quinlan, Dallas McPherson, Kendry Morales -- even Howie Kendrick played some 1B last year...

Kotchman missed most of last season with mono, he needs to prove he is healthy. McPherson is out indefintely and is a third baseman, Morales and Quinlan are back-ups at best.

Glove=yes, work ethic=yes, bat=no. Erstad's a mixed bag.
