Before getting to the weekend pitching matchups, let's recap the week that was:
Monday: looked solid in a 5-2 win over FLA Tuesday: looked terrible in a 4-0 loss to FLA Wednesday: looked great in a 6-0 win over FLA (Kip Wells especially) Thursday: looked lousy in a 10-1 loss
You wonder if the bad news about Carpenter had an effect on last night's game. I don't think this should be an excuse. As TLR would say, no one is going to feel sorry for you when the injuries are piling up. Carp will need 12 months of rehab, and the earliest we can expect him back is July 2008. Fine. Move on. Carpenter has earned the right for Cards fans to be patient with him as he recovers. Tommy John surgery is nothing to rush back from, and every precaution needs to be taken with his rehab. At my volleyball game last night, my friends were wondering if this might end his career. I don't think the results will be that drastic, but I guess time will tell.
Now for the weekend matchups. The Cards continue a 4-game set in Hot-lanta this weekend. The Cubbies host the D-Backs, and the Brew Crew welcome the Barry Bonds Traveling Circus to the House that Selig Built. Bud will be on hand this weekend should Barry hit 755, 756, etc. We'll see if the top 2 in the Central will distance themselves from the pack ahead of both teams coming to STL next week.
FRI: Wainwright (STL) vs. James (ATL) SAT: Looper (STL) vs. Carlyle (ATL) SUN: Thompson (STL) vs. Reyes (ATL) (NOTE) Sunday's game is 7:05 on ESPN.
Enjoy the games if you can. If the pattern holds true, you'll enjoy tonight's game and Sunday night's game.
