Will Rockies Hot Streak End?

The Boston Red Sox will be facing a much stronger offense than the Cleveland Indians, as they face the Colorado Rockies tonight in the first game of the 2007 World Series. The Indians team they defeated in the ALCS only had two players with over 78 RBIs while the Rockies have five players with over 90 RBIs.

The Rockies also know they can beat Josh Beckett, since they beat him 7-1 on June 14th. It was the only game this season that Beckett struck out only one batter. Beckett gave up 10 hits in that game. Only the Minnesota Twins and the Texas Rangers, who also had 10 hits, and the New York Yankees who had 13 base hits had 10 hits or more against Beckett this season. So the Rockies will not be intimidated by Beckett since they have already beat him this year.

The negative for the Rockies is that they have never been in a World Series game. To my knowledge, only Willy Taveras has even been in a World Series game so that is a definite advantage for Red Sox. Tonight's opening game should be a pitcher's battle but with these two explosive offenses anything can happen.

Will be very surprised if the Rockies continue their hot streak against the Red Sox especially since they will only get to play three home games at the most in Colorado with the the other four games if necessary being played in historic Fenway Park.

The loss of Tim Wakefield could hurt the Red Sox since anytime you take a 17 game winner out of a World Series starting rotation it has to affect the team. Almost cerainly Terry Francona will start Jon Lester in Game 4 since he is not likely to start no-hit pitcher Clay Buchholz in the World Series. Lester has a 4-0 record this season. Lester has had control problems issuing 31 walks in 63 innings. In comparison Josh Beckett has issued 40 walks in 200 innings which is only 9 more walks in 137 more innings than Lester pitched.

The Red Sox have to be favored because of the homefield advantage and having had great control from their first three starters who have combined to walk only 3 hitters in 35 innings in the ALCS with Curt Schilling issuing no walks in 11 innings.

Well, the thing you have to remember about the Rockies this year is that in interleague play, they took two out of three from the Sox at Fenway (they beat Beckett and Schilling, and lost to Matsuzaka).

They outscored the Sox something ridiculous in those games as well.

They lost to Wakefield, who threw 8 innings allowing 1 run. They have not seen Matsuzaka.

For most of the country, their first exposure to seeing the Rockies play has been in the playoffs. Whereas, most have seen the Sox play all season. The Red Sox are a fierce team, however, I think that the Rockies will match up well against them. I look for the Rockies to split the first two games in Boston, then return home to win two of three, and the sixth (game) in Boston.

Tylersalt..thanks for the additional info on interleague games between Rockies and Red Sox. This info shows this is an more of an even matchup that I thought it would be. Having five players with over 90 RBI's show this Rockies team can hit with the best.

Tonight should be a great pitching matchup with Beckett 3-0 and Francis 2-0 in the postseason...one of them will probably lose their first game of the postseason.

Will be very interesting to see how Rockies play tonight after such a long layoff. A long rest is not always a good thing. They can practice and play similated games all day but nothing compares to a real game when they face a pitcher like Beckett in the first game.

Low tonight in Denver is 35 to 41 degrees...don't know who that favors if anyone since both teams are used to playing in cold weather.

I remember during the Phillies-Rockies series there were some serious winds coming through the park in both Philly and Denver...Living in Boston I can certainly speak to the winds here as well... I'd say the lineups are about even, with the Rox not really having a better player but having a much better overall lineup...plus you make Ortiz or Youkilis (most likely Youk) leave the lineup when they shift to Denver (But couldn't you see them moving Youk to right and benching Drew...hmmm...i know, it sounds dumb)

Youkilis would be an upgrade over Drew even if Drew hit the grand slam the other night..the law of averages had to catch up with him sooner or later..Youkilis has 18 games in left field and has no errors in 39 chances. This is precisely why the DH needs to be in both leagues or no league. It is similar to the NBA having one conference have 3 point shots and the other conference only allow 2 point shots or in the NFL have one conference with 2 point conversions and one point conversions in the other conference.

Wind has to be an even bigger distraction than playing in rain or snow since it affects where a ball winds up.

Niteowl, I agree with almost everything you are saying except the DH comments. I like the the difference in the leagues, I think it is more interesting, and there are more options for the managers. I don't think you should make the basketball and football comparisons.

I just had a discussion about who would win the world series with one of the teachers in my school. He wasn't sure, and I wasn't sure either. I came up with a prediction: whoever wins game 1 will win the World Series. Josh Beckett is 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA, I believe, and pitched very well in all three games he pitched, BUT, he has done bad the only time he faced the Rockies this season. It was his first loss

I think that is a good way to do it... I've been saying that it is going to be either a 4 game series or a 7 games series... there is no in between...

I just went outside and it's pretty chilly here in Norwood (56 degrees) after temperatures hit 78 yesterday. It will be in the mid 50s tonight, with a chance of rain showers. Maybe practicing in the snow will help Colorado.

Well, obviously the Red Sox have all but wrapped up the answer to this question... going to the bottom of the 6th with the score 13-1 Red Sox. Who the hell knows how this series will go now and if it'll be a short one.

I respect the comments of Rockymount7 even though I don't agree about the DH. I think the DH has skewered the records of AL and NL...it is not so much I am against the DH but more a case of not having it in both leagues so record books won't be affected.
