Wickman To The Braves

15
Vote

Bob Wickman is now an Atlanta Brave. The Cleveland Indians, with their playoff hopes long since dead, traded the veteran closer to the Braves for Class A catching prospect Max Ramirez. Wickman leaves Cleveland after becoming the club's all-time saves leader with 138. Due to his status as a 10-5 player (10 years in the majors and 5 with his current team), Wickman had to approve the deal.

In the 2006 season with the Rome Braves, Ramirez was hitting .285 (76-267) with 17 doubles, 9 homers and 37 RBI in 80 games and was selected to the 2006 South Atlantic League All-Star Game.

Braves are set with McCann as their catcer. Looks like Atlanta believes that they have a true shot to make the playoffs in 2006.

They are only 5 games back from a playoff spot. And with the Rocks dropping like... rocks in the standings, and the NL West making up 4 of the 7 teams ahead of them, it's not that far fetched that they grab the Wild-card.

Atlanta's bullpen is horrible. I think its a good move for them. I wonder if this is a signal that they will not be trading smoltz.

Why would this signal a trade of Smoltz? They still need starting pitching, and Smoltz is about the only good one they've had this year.

The Tribe and Braves swapping a closer near deadline time... that's happened before. Only this time the closer isn't a racist homophobic redneck. That doesn't seem fair.

Not sure how I accidentally submitted a blank comment. Anyway, I'm seriously wondering why the Indians need another catcher. I have to believe another trade is in the works. At any rate, good for the Indians in getting something for Wicky. While I would have liked to see him retire as an Indian, this sport leaves no room for sentimentality.

Because of how many catchers don't work out. It's a difficult position, it's tough on the body. There are a lot of catching prospects that don't really work out. I don't think you can ever have too many catchers. Especially one this young. He's just at Double A ball. They're building for their future.

That's a good point. But considering the huge hole they have at second base and a general lack of power-hitting outfielders, it's curious why they would go the catcher route. But perhaps by the time Ramirez is ready, V-Mart will be at 1B or DH.

Maybe they'll do something to address the hole at second, but seriously, power-hitting outfielders are a dime a dozen. Not SPECTACULAR ones, but there are tons of outfielders out there that can hit for power. For me, that wouldn't be as much of a concern as second base or catcher.

Fausto Carmona is a candidate for the new closer roll. what ever happened to fernando cabrera; wasn't he supposed to be a great pitcher? Also, with guillermo mota in the bullpen, I think the indians didn't lose much.

Cabrera has struggled this year. Most think that he pitched better than he is last year and is pitching worse than he is this year. Hopefully he will find some balance next season.

V-Mart is a pretty poor defensive catcher. No Matt LeCroy, but closer to the Mike Piazza mold. 1B might be his future position if one of their young catchers develops into a major leaguer.
