Why we should all love Albert Pujols..

View From America: Princely Albert

Albert Pujols.

His .329 average, 31 home runs, and 89 RBIs are three very good reasons why St Louis Cardinals fans can't get enough of Albert Pujols. But Alex Ferguson says that that's not the only reason why we should one of the best players the modern era has ever seen.

At the moment, Albert Pujols is one of the best players in baseball. His .315 batting average is plain sickening, and the way the St Louis Cardinals offense can heat up on any given day, he's sure to be a Triple Crown contender right up until the curtain finally falls down on the MLB regular season. Oh, and if he continues to bat people in like he is at the moment (he's put 65 runners across the plate up to now), he's on course to hit 130 RBIs by the end of the season. Had he not been injured prior to the All-Star Break, he would have had a good run at Hack Wilson's legendary 191.

And even if he's having an 0-4 day (rare, but it does happen- even to Triple Crown contenders), the 24 year-old is good enough at the sac fly or a runner-advancing ground out to make him an invaluable addition to the team. Oh, and he's not bad at picking an errant throw out of the dirt at first base, either.

But that's not the only reason why we should love Albert.

Despite getting a $100 million (over 7 years) contract, family life for Albert and his wife Deidre hasn't exactly been plain sailing. His daughter, Isabella, has Down Syndrome, and suddenly he had a mission on top of his Christian one- raising money for his foundation which helps families affected by Down Syndrome through increased awareness and the meeting of "tangible needs."

"We didn't choose Down Syndrome, Down Syndrome chose us," Pujols shares. You can almost hear the first baseman's sleeves being rolled up even as we speak.

And Albert sure knows how to use his celebrity value.

For a certain donation, you can have a signed Albert Pujols shirt, sticker, baseball drawing, and if you pay between $5,000- $9,999, you even get invited to the meet and greet. Corporate donors have already jumped on board, with household names like Ford, Morgan Stanley, Outback Steakhouse, American Airlines, Nike, and Wheaties already adding their weight to an important issue. There's also a golf fundraiser where you'll be able to meet Cardinal heroes past and present-including Pujols and manager Tony LaRussa. Hey- anyone know Tiger Woods' cell number?

And even if he didn't have enough callings from The Big Man, he's also got a sideline in the education and raising of living standards for Dominican orphans, a far cry from how some professional athletes spend their hard-earned green.

"I try to spend as much time with God and my family. That's more important than anything I'm doing in baseball," Albert says.

At least someone has their priorities right.

You know Sir Alex Ferguson is the manager of Manchester United? Is that the idea, or...? Pujols has been excellent this year, it's a shame he got injured while looking on track for 80-odd HRs and about 200RBIs.

I don't think God needs 'em... although sometimes it seems God could use a little better publicity.

You know what unfortunately it all comes down to and why Pujols will never be a superstar? He's boring and he plays in St Louis. It's not right that just because he's boring and reserved he should basically be punished... but it's true. The bigger personalities in the game will always be more popular and loved despite that fact that Pujols is more talented. I know I've fallen into the trap. I know how good the guy is, but I honestly just don't care about what the guy does. I'll always be more interested in what Pedro or Schilling or Bonds does.

Good to know your closed-minded bias goes for all sports and not just basketball. People like you need to realize you're a media fan, not a sprots fan. I real sports fans appreciate the best players no matter where they play. What's the point in having teams all over the country if you think on the one's in New York, Boston and LA matter? Just to have 20 other teams to make those three cities look better?
