Why the Red Sox WILL NOT Win the AL East

This is why the Boston Red Sox will NOT win the AL East.

NYY_1256.gif

First off, we all know that the Yankees have been on fire ever since the All Star break, and I just want to congratulate them for making it this far. I’m pretty sure that almost everyone believed that they wouldn’t make it this far, and now, not only are they only 5 1/2 games behind the team with the highest winning percentage, but they are now in the lead of the AL Wild Card, which really proves that they doing great; they are doing better than teams like the Tigers, Indians, and Mariners.

Secondly, it has been said by many people that the pitching of the Red Sox is really good. To be honest, that is what’s keeping them in first place right now. Since the All-Star break, the Red Sox have allowed 114 runs, which is great for the Red Sox, but look deep into where they stand in pitching, shall we?

The Red Sox acquired Eric Gagne right before the trade deadline, and I must say that he has done awful for the Red Sox, pitching in 6 games (5 innings pitched), with 7 earned runs, a 12.60 ERA, and a 2.600 WHIP. His ERA total has jumped from 2.16 to 4.12, which is really bad, especially for a reliever and in that amount of time. Plus, Terry Francona keeps putting him in game deciding situations. Whatever happened to Manny Delcarmen? I’d say he had about 3 Eric Gagne games (so to speak) in the entire season. What happened to Hideki Okajima? What happened to Jonathan Papelbon? If you’re saving him for close game situations, you just screwed up about 3-4 times. You know that Papelbon can seal the deal just about every time, and if you’re picking Gagne over Papelbon, you’ve got to be out of your mind. I think that because he got injured last year, they’re trying to give him some rest, which is why they acquired Gagne in the first place. But it’s not working for the Red Sox, so do something Francona! Look at the numbers. Eric Gagne has been involved in 1/3 of all of the Red Sox games since the trade deadline, and he’s retired the side without giving up a run only twice. Francona has too much faith in Gagne, when he has three other guys that can get the job done. The Sox should probably be ahead of the Yankees by about 8 games. Nobody’s perfect at what they do, but if you make the same mistake over and over again, you have gone too far, in my opinion.

http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_150378.jpg

Another pitcher that the Red Sox should worry about is Jon Lester. In five starts, he has a 5.14 ERA, as well as a very high pitch count. He did lower it down against Tampa Bay in his last start, and look at the decrease of the ERA he had (6.43 to 5.14). If he lowers his pitch count, that’ll be great for him and the Sox, but if he doesn’t, which he has trouble doing, he probably won’t do as well, which will affect the pitching of the Red Sox, the biggest aspect that the Red Sox have.

Jon_lester_fistpump.jpg

Look at Daisuke Matsuzaka. Many people say he is overrated when the truth is he could be considered underrated. Everyone judges him on how many wins and losses he has. He's 13-9. Big deal. I think he could've had more wins than Josh Beckett so far in the season, but because he doesn't have run support, something that the Yankees almost always have when a pitcher pitches a gem, he loses games. Six out of the nine losses he has had this season are when he surrendered three runs or less. That is absolutely ridiculous, especially with the lineup that the Red Sox have.

mats_eb.jpg

In an article I read yesterday about how the Yankees don’t have the pitching, I believe that it is true that they don't have the pitching that the Red Sox have. It is true that they are worse in ERA, WHIP, and opponent batting average than the Red Sox, but last in saves? That is irrelevant. Blown saves is different. The reason why the Yankees are last in saves is because Mariano Rivera doesn’t need to close due to the fact that there is usually a big lead for the Yankees in the ninth inning. Their offence is great, as they lead the league in runs scored, batting average and home runs. With those stats, I don’t think you need great pitching like the Red Sox, who currently have 95 less runs than the Yankees do. To help out, the Yankees signed someone else: Joba Chamberlain. He has pitched really well for the Yankees and has yet to surrender a run. He has been huge for the Yankee bullpen, and is a key factor for why I think the Yankees are going to win the division.

o8LIsqLc.jpg

The Red Sox have also been struggling to keep their lead, and they have the Orioles to thank because they have done really well against the Yankees as of late. They are now 8-4 against them, and they gave the Red Sox a chance to gain a couple more games against the Yankees, BUT the Red Sox haven’t done so well against them either. On the other hand, the Angels are the team that the Yankees should thank. It is surprising to know that the Angels were swept by the Red Sox the first series they faced each other, and now, when you turn on the TV, it is more likely to see the Angels beat the Red Sox.

When looking at both schedules, the Yankees have a "hard" schedule. They are facing the Tigers five more times (a team that has surrendered 623 runs, which is 3 rd in the league), the Mariners three more times (a team that has surrendered 579 runs, which is 6 th in the league), and the Angels three more times (which is probably going to be the hardest series for the Yankees, as they have good pitching and a good offence).  We all know that the Yankees have the best offence in baseball, by far. With these “great” teams facing the Yankees soon, people don’t acknowledge the fact that they rely mostly on offence. When it comes to batting, the Yankees would have a higher probability of winning than any other team. On those three teams, the only pitchers who would get a win would be Justin Verlander and John Lackey. Who else? I don’t think there is another starter who would win against the Yanks. Just remember this: Pitching vs. Hitting: Hitting almost always wins.

That’s basically what I think about the Yankees. They have been red hot since the All-Star break, and they have worked very hard to get where they are right now. Derek Jeter said that they could still win the division after the All-Star break, it looks they will do it with the stats that they have. Just remember: in a pitching vs. hitting situation, hitting always wins.

Don't forget though that the Yankees got fat off 15 games with Tampa Bay and KC coming out of the break too. I could get a team from the Little League World Series to win at least 8 against them.

Yes, they did, but so did the Red Sox, and look what happened to them. They have this thing with the Royals: they can't beat them. And when comes to beating the Royals, the Yankees have won every game against them, correct me if I'm wrong, and by a lot more runs than the Red Sox did when they won.

Actually KC is 1-6 against the Yankees...De La Rosa beat Kei Igawa 7-0 on 7/26. The Yanks are only 7-5 against Tampa Bay surprisingly, however.

Boston went 3-3 against the Royals. They also are 7-2 against Tampa Bay.

The statistical anomaly is that the Yankees get three MORE games with the Royals, at KC Sept. 7-9.

And those are three games that the Yankees are going to win. WOW!! 7-5? That's surprising. BUT, I bet you most of those losses came before the All-Star break when the Yankees were slumping..

Pretty funny to read these posts "Yankees get more games with Royals than Red Sox" yada yada yada. How far the Red Sox "machine" has fallen in the last 2 months. As if that kind of analysis matters if a team is truly dominant. I'm not a Yankee fan (Mets baby), but it is fun and interesting to watch the clouds of "smug" dissipate from over the Boston area.

First of all, I am not from Boston, or anywhere near there. Second, I am not a Red Sox fan, if you looked at my profile. The point that I made was that the Yankees got fat right after the All Star Break playing the Royals 7 times and Tampa Bay 8 times in the first 25 games coming out of the break. Teams always can make a charge playing bottom feeders.

Well had my comment been specifically about yours, I would have directly replied to your post. As original as you think you are, you certainly aren't the first to mention the Tampa Bay/Royals etc issue in these forums, which has been made often by Red Sox fans. I saw this issue raised yet again and made the remark.

Tim Kurkjian also said that the Yankees would miss the playoffs, as well as the Mets, not the division... playoffs, and I consider him a pretty smart analyst. He picked the Mariners and the Rockies to win the Wild Card, and the Red Sox and Braves to win their respective divisions.

My wife even knows Steve Philips is a moron. I picked Prince Fielder for this year's Home Run Derby, and then Steve Philips did. I told her he just gave Fielder the kiss of death. Sure enough, she bets against Steve Philips every single time and she's kicking my ass this season.

No no no no no no no no no no no no Good pitching will beat good hitting 80 to 90 percent of the time. And even from a team-wide perspective, good pitching wins out. Just look at the Cleveland Indians in the late 1990s. One of the best offenses ever assembled. Alomar, Thome, Ramirez, and so on. They scored 1,000 runs one year. They only made the World Series once, and fell flat in the playoffs every time.

Then why is it that the Yankees are doing so well right now and the Red Sox are playing mediocre? Beckett's still doing well, Daisuke's doing well, and Wakefield's HEATING UP. Lester's last start was pretty good, but the Yankees are still doing good with what? A better bullpen, and Chien-Ming Wang? I gotta disagree with you there.

I know I'm automatically going to be accused of being bias, but the Red Sox should win the division. They have a 5 game lead, and the only team they play that has given them trouble outside the Yankees and that is the Athletics, which is 2 games at home. People can't honestly believe Gange is going to be a 12 ERA guy the rest of the year, he's has to do better at some point. Plus, Manny and Ortiz are heating up, which immediately improves the offense that has struggled at times. I can see the Yankees winning the wild card, but to overcome a 5 game lead against the team with the best record in baseball is asking a lot.

Really? Manny and Ortiz are heating up? You can't really judge whether a person is heating up because of one game (yesterday when Ortiz hit the Grand Slam). If you're not, then you're mistaken because Ortiz and Manny definitely not heating up. They are hitting .231 and .238 (respectively) in the last 10 games, and so far in August, Ortiz has an OBP of .392, which is least OBP he has had this month of the season (it has also brought him down .08 from his season OBP). As far as Manny goes, he heated up in July, like he always does, and so far, he has a .307 OBP, a .397 SLG, and a .250 AVG. I don't think he's heating up right now, but he's actually doing worse. The last home run Manny hit was on August 5th and the last home that Ortiz hit excluding his two home runs in the Angels/Red Sox series was on August 3rd. So much for Ortiz and Manny "heating up". The Red Sox better keep doing what they're doing with their pitching, because if they don't, the Yankees will be on top...

Yes, and they have slowed down too. So far in August, Coco Crisp is hitting .212, with 0 HRs, and 2 RBIs, 3 SBs, .333 OBP, .288 SLG; not that good compared to July (.323, 1 HR, 20 RBIs, 3 SBs, .391 OBP, .505 SLG)

As far as Lugo and Pedroia go, theyre doing really well. .375 and .359 AVG, .382 and .423 OBP, and a .531 SLG, and a .500 SLG.

BUT, Youkilis, who did really well in the beginning of the season has REALLY slowed down. He's hitting .114 in the last 10 games he's played, and has struck out 16 times out of 42 plate appearances. So much for a contact hitter, huh? And in July/August he's hit about .218. He hasn't been doing so great for a while now.

I don't predict the future, but one has to follow a team very closely to be qualified to make general statements about it. The statement that Mariano doesn't have many saves "because the Yankees have had too big a lead" (in effect) isn't close to being true. It shows no awareness of Mariano, his 13 regular seasons of play, 12 continuous post seasons of play, the situations this year that effect his various stats, and how any valuable closer would be used. First, they lost too many games in the first part of the season--the opposite of what you said, that they "were too far ahead." This is an example of why the internet will be more regulated at some point in the future. Too much misinformation.

And look at Dice-K. He has had the worst luck this year, like I said in my article. With the season coming to an end, his stats are, pretty much, not going to change. So, let's look at what he's done.

He's 14-12, with a 4.48 ERA. Out of 31 starts, he's allowed 3 runs or less 18 times. You know how many losses he's got out of those starts? 6! I repeat, 6!! Why? Because the offense can't help Daisuke out with the GREAT lineup they have.

I admit, I was wrong about who's going to win the division, which was the point in my article. I was stating one of my reasons as to why the Red Sox wouldn't win it.
