Why the BCS Can Suck It!

by Nola Chick

Here's the old news: the BCS is an unreliable, unpredictable, and plain old un-smart (yeah, I know that's not a word) way to determine the best team in NCAA football.

Here's the new news: the BCS can suck it!

BCS (which stands for Bogus Crap Shoot) is a system based on statistical figures and polls used to determine college football rankings. It ultimately decides who will play in which BCS bowl game, which team gets ranked where, and who goes head to head in the National Championship game. The system has been in place since 1998. That's also about the time when fans of one team or another started realizing they were getting "Al Gored" out of a title that was rightfully theirs.

Just ask the 5 teams since 1998 who've gone undefeated but denied a chance to compete for a national title. (Poor Tulane.) What about when teams don't win their conference championships and still get to play for a national title? (Yeah Nebraska, I'm talking to you!) Or the dreaded split title nonsense like we saw in 2003? It's a cluster I tell you, a cluster! Then there's this year when something equally disturbing about the BCS ranking system hit home for me. It's not even about how many games you lose; it's about WHEN you lose those games.

As it stands, there are 4 one loss teams in the top 5: Missouri, West Virginia, Ohio State, and Kansas. Kansas is ranked 5th behind 10-2 Georgia, even though their only loss is to #1 ranked Missouri. Had Missouri tapped that ass 4 weeks ago as opposed to last Saturday, there's a good chance Kansas would still be #2. Meanwhile, they're stuck looking up the butts of the Bulldogs, who lost to unranked South Carolina and unranked Tennessee. Both are in the SEC, which signifies their opponents weren't complete disasters, but that's still not like losing to the #1 team in the nation. Furthermore, LSU is also 10-2, also lost to one unranked SEC team and a top 25 SEC team, but because the loss occurred so late in the season, the Tigers' title hopes are out the window and they have to live with the notion that Georgia, an undoubtedly inferior football program, has a better shot at a title game appearance.

Oh yeah BCS, you can suck it REAL good!

I know what you're thinking. You're thinking that every year some sore loser feels the need to whine about the craptastic nature of the BCS and the need for a playoff system. You're thinking that since I'm an LSU fan, this is just my turn. And while you're partly right, what's also true is that there's something to be said about the fact that every year a handful of teams can walk away from their season feeling robbed of a national title. While to us fans this may just be a source of irritation, this game is everything to many of these players. Should their hard work boil down to some flawed, subjective, statistical mumbo-jumbo invented by a bunch of greedy suits? Why not settle the title disputes on the field instead of in some corner office over cigars and brandy? I mean for the love of Tebow, LSU is ranked below Virginia Tech.... you know, the team LSU beat earlier in the season…the team whose only credible victory against a ranked opponent was versus #16 Virginia last week. I don't know if it's the Thanksgiving turkey rotting in my fridge or Paris Hilton's new perfume, but something stinks!

So I say, suck it BCS! May the thorns of the Rose Bowl prick you like the prick you are. May the sweetness of the Sugar Bowl give you Type II Diabetes. May the Fiesta Bowl bring on a gnarly case of Montezuma's Revenge. And may the Orange Bowl have less to do with Florida Oranges and more to do with lead laced oranges straight from a Chinese street vendor.

Now excuse me while I head off to make my purple and gold "The BCS is a Douche-bag" t-shirt.

I agree the BCS system is a very flawed system, it needs fixed, and a playoff system is the only thing that can fix it. And to your point where someone crys every year because they think they were rob, well I'm a WVU Fan born, bred and very proud of the Mountaineers, but the system does "SUCK". Hawaii is not going to get a shot and they've done everything they can do to get there, Boise State did last year and never got a shot. Don't get me wrong you can say what you want, but I do believe WVU deserves this shot (Gotta Win against Pitt. First) but I'd love to see a playoff system that truly is fair and the victor is undisputed.

Does Hawaii deserve a shot at the National Title? Or the same shot that Boise St got last year to prove themselves against a top notch school from a BCS conference? I say yes to my second question, but no to my first. They'll remain qualified for an at-large bid if they beat washington and they deserve one at least as much as Kansas does.

Pip: I say yes to #1 if the pass the test in #2. Before Boise State beat OU, I think it was fair to say that BSU didn't really have much of an argument for a national title bid. After they beat OU I think it's hard to argue that they shouldn't have had a shot... but hindsight is 20/20 and the season had ended.

While I hate what's happening to my LSU, I think WVU is a good team and deserves as much of a shot at the title as Hawaii, Georgia, and the handful of one loss teams who'll likely get stuck on the outside looking in. At any rate, good luck against Pitt and down with the BCS!

Dear haters: Tell me (and us) what you would like to see (EXACTLY!) and how you will completely eliminate the need for a top 25 ranking system. Everyone wants to rip the BCS but few have actually proposed or supported a specific plan to replace it. So cough up your idea or shut up! If you don't have a solution to the "problem" then you have nothing to say. Or for the cowards at least pick for me the number of teams you want in a playoff: 4, 6, 8, 12, or 16.

BCS- Only the best, screw the rest. Don't like it? Don't lose. Didn't lsoe but still ignored? Play harder teams. They won't play you? Pay them more! Life is harsh, so is football.

Here's an informal poll I'd like to back-end off your mini-rant there....

Let's say that the BCS employed a plus-one system. What that means is that you match up bowls however you like -- most likely using the current BCS system -- but the National Championship matchup is determined *after* the Bowls, not before it. In this case, you'd probably have Missouri going to the Fiesta and WV to the Orange Bowl.

So, with that system in place, how many teams do you see as having a viable shot at getting to the national title game? I see four:

  1. Missouri
  2. West Virginia
  3. Ohio State
  4. Hawaii

And I take them in that order, for the most part. If WV wins, they're in... same for Missouri. If one of them falters, and OSU wins, the OSU goes in. If two of those three fall, Hello Hawaii!

I'd probably not go five deep, but that's a story for another day.

(And no, I'm not suggesting a four team playoff.)

I say 12-16 teams in the playoffs. Screw the BCS, use the AP if you want a top 25. How is it fair that a team can go UNDEFEATED and not get a shot to play for a championship? Is that not esentially eliminating teams from contention before the season begins? If a team wins out, they should get to play for the National Championship, or at least get a shot. The BCS might end up giving OSU a chance at the National Title after losing to Illinois, but Hawaii has to sit home during the National Championship despite beating everyone they had to play.

Pay them more? You are an arrogant prick in that case. A team should not have to pay extra money to play for the national championship game. If you are in DIA, you deserve a chance to win the National Championship game. That is clearly not the case with the BCS

I do believe that many members here have proposed their ideas previously on this matter. in fact I believe that a 16 team playoff has been mentioned the most. I don't think anyone wants to completely eliminate the top 25 system which I believe actually ranks all of the teams, we just talk about the top 25. In fact, this article is about only 2 teams getting a shot.

The +1 system is what will eventually happen. Just as you desribed (probably reverting to the old bowl aliances) the bowls take whom they want then we figure it out in one game. I like this because it allows for flexibility, which a \playoff would not have. This year we have 4 0 and 1 loss teams, some year we;ll have 5, or 3 or 6 and this will allow that to play out as fairly as possible without allowing 2 or 3 loss teams into the mix until absolutely necessary. The other benefit is that a team like georgia or Kansas doesn't get to backdoor their way into the Title game without playing in the their own conference title games. Under a +1 they have to prove themselves against a tough opponent. It also helps ease some of the Conference title game issues. They are up to 10 teams so another bowl would have to sign on, Cotton maybe? I agree with your 4 teams, but see Mizzou going Orange, and WVU will either go to the Fiesta against Hawaii or Orange against Mizzou. I like the traditional alliances unless something needs to be worked out.

i agree that the top 25 ranking system should stay in place. a 12 team playoff system shouldn't be that melodramatic to pull off. that way, you still get the benefits of the ranking system (eg strength of schedule) without the b.s. of the bcs.

False Prophet the Pay them more crack was a shot at the amount of money that gets spents by teams that want to play certain other teams in the regular season ($40,000 to App St by Michigan. $250,000 by Michigan State to back out of a game with Hawaii). I'm not saying that a team should be able to buy their way into the title game.

I would love to see a 16 team playoff. I know that it is probaly not going to happen but it would settle "Most" of the controversy in who should be crowned. And Hawaii "Didn't" lose and don't get a shot unless this weekend proves crazy "Again", then they will probaly still be left out. And as for the polls being Insignificant, well pretty much they are at the beginning of the season, a novelty at best, but they do play a role in the final take, come the end of the season.

Whoa hold on a second.

I think you need to take a step back and realize what you are saying. I think you owe the term "douchebag" an apology. I mean did you really need to associate it with the BCS?

A little harsh don't you think?

How about a 64 team field after the bowl games with games played at neutral sites? I am working on a bracket for that and I'll post it Sunday night.

64 teams is mildly ridiculous. There are not 64 teams worthy of playing for the title, unless we are going to just cancel the regular season and play a full 128 team tournament and include everyone. We would not want to see ANYONE left out. Florida International deserves there title shot dammit!

The BCS has nothing to do with the schools or the championship or the teams. It is about money. Once a playoff system removes the ability for them to pick and choose who plays in their bowls, then they lose money. That is why a college football playoff for the National Championship will never, ever get created.

You are partially correct. The money thing is an issue, and most anti-BCS people don't get that. Not saying I like it, but it is reality.

okay there would be a 16 team bracket which would be perfect in my mind. You also just can't have any 16 teams, you have to include all conference champions. So 11 conference champions and the 5 next best teams. For the wild card teams you have to include the strength of schedule and all the stuff they include for the Top 25 Rankings

ooo and how about this...just a little fun idea so you have 16 teams, make that 5th wild card team play in a play-in game against the Division I-AA Champion...I think that would be pretty cool to give them a chance too especially after the App St. vs Mich game

Yes because teams with 3 and 4 losses in the regular season have any right to play for a national championship! Also, you should have to do more than just win a conference to earn a title shot. Winning a conference is not enough.
