Why isn't the NFL in Los Angeles? And why isn't it the Arizona Roadrunners?

A year and a half ago I moved to Southern California's Inland Empire which is considered part of the Los Angeles metro area.  Not too long ago there were two football teams here but as everyone knows the Rams bolted for St. Louis and the Raiders scrambled back to Oakland.

Here's an idea: get another NFL team in here.  Either expansion or one of the lesser performing established teams such as the Jacksonville Jaguars, it doesn't matter.  So no one wants to play at the ancient, dangerous Coliseum, the inappropriate Anaheim stadium or even the Rose Bowl?  Build a new place!  There is certainly enough money out here and plenty of potential fans.

So real estate and land are at statospheric prices in L.A.?  Do what the car dealers do, move to Fontana or Rancho Cucamonga.  There are perfect spots for a magnificent facility near the intersection of the 10 and the 15 freeways.  And Las Vegas is just a short day trip away.

And why in heaven's name is it the Arizona Cardinals when there isn't a cardinal flying within 1,000 miles of that hot, dusty city?  They still wear the same basic uniform that they wore when Jim Hart was their quarterback!  The people of St. Louis must get weirded out when they go there to play the Rams.

I always wondered why LA doesn't have an American Football team. Didn't they lose a vote to Houston or something when the team was expanded?

The Arizona Cardinals need to be the Cardinals... They came from Chicago initially, before St Louis. So who knows!

Perhaps it should be the LA Cardinals?

The NFL was ready to give a team to LA, if it had a stadium deal. However, since no deal was reached, they gave it instead to Houston, who did put out a plan for a new stadium. The reason I think LA doesn't have a team is because it really doesn't care about what the NFL wants. Most teams built new stadiums because they strong arm their cities into building in or they'll move. LA hasn't given in to threats, so no franchise.

No offense to any Bills fans on the site, but why the hell is there a franchise in Buffalo, New York?

The AFL picked it back at a time when people did live there (it has lost about half the population over the last 50 years).

Population is no issue... Look at Green Bay.

You have to be kidding? I am a Jets fan, so I have no love for the Bills. That being said, Bills fans are the most dedicated fans I have ever seen in the NFL. Every city I have lived in has had a "Bill's Backer" bar that is mobed on game day. Not only that, but the Bills are the only football team that plays in the State of NY.

Green Bay is an anomaly. Still, back in 1960 Buffalo was one of the biggest cities in the US (20th) without a team. Coincidentally, many of the others included Houston, Boston, San Diego, and Denver - all AFL teams.

The fact that the Packers are still in Green Bay is a completely different issue, and the fact that Lambeau Field averaged 116% capacity in 2006 makes the question of population entirely irrelevant.

The Packer remain where they are because the town has ownership and there is not money hungry person looking for cash

Stockholders to be precise. The City of Green Bay and Brown County have ownership of the stadium.

The Buffalo fanbase is rabid and they keep sticking in there and they have a very very loyal owner. It will actually be a sad day when he passes and the new owner moves the team to LA

So do the Bills have the lowest attendance numbers in the NFL?

No not by a long shot. The Bills still have a solid draw just not a big enough market

Actually that's not what I meant. I meant to ask why. Last year, the attendance numbers were middle of the road in the NFL, but only at 84.5% capacity of Ralph Wilson Stadium, far far below the league average.

The Bills are suffering from a shrinking population, a bad team, and an old stadium. Put all that together and its tough to draw the way you used to.

Here is the biggest reasons why LA doesn't have a team. The people of LA don't want to pay for a new stadium. The Rose Bowl, Anaheim, and the Coliseum don't seem to really want an NFL team. The people of Houston helped to pay for the stadium, and the people of LA don't want too.

Which is ironic considering how many billions of dollars are in the LA area. They could dedicate the earnings of one movie a quarter over a year and pay for a stadium.

Sports in LA are different than sports in any other town. There's a hugely diverse fan base, drawn from all over the world by the lure of fame and fortune. Sporting events are treated like any other event in Hollyweird, a place for famous people to be seen by people who want to be famous. The Dodgers can't people to the game on time (gotta be fashionably late dontcha know) and can't get them to stay to the end (gotta beat the traffic dontcha know); the Lakers' courtside seats have taken on out-of-this world prices and are inhabited by folks in need of constant exposure on camera, no matter what the venue. If the cost benefit really showed a team was warranted, there'd be one there by now. The costs for constructing a stadium and road infrastructure to support it must outweigh the potential returns or somebody woulda been all over it by now.

The Arizona Cardinals are the oldest continuously operating professional football franchise. They originated in Chicago around 1918 and have been owned and operated under the name Cardinals by the Bidwell family since their inception. They were named the Cardinals because their original uniforms which were donated by a local college team were red. The Bidwell family has stated that they will never change the name as long as they own the team, nor will they have a winning season.

Funny that you mention Roadrunners as that name does have a history in Phoenix, however in a completely different sport, hockey.

The original Roadrunners began play at the Veterans Memorial Colesium in 1967 and were a member of the World Hockey Association until 1979.

They made their return in 1989 as an International Hockey League franchise and played games at The Colesium before folding in 1997.

They are now back for a third incarnation as an East Coast Hockey League franchise. They made their return to the ice in 2005, except this time playing their games at US Airways Center. Former NHL star Claude Lemieux is team president.

Ok, that's a good reason for a team in Arizona to be named the Cardinals.
